CareerOneStop, a service of the U.S. Department of Labor, offers information and resources to help veterans find employment, explore training options and access veteran and civilian benefits: Veterans ReEmployment portal
The REALifelines: Veterans’ Employment and Career Transition Advisor offers guidance for veterans on finding a job, returning to a pre-service employer, working for the Federal government, benefits and other support services, and assistance for family members. It also offers specific information for wounded warriors, including guidance on job accommodations. For Veterans seeking employment and training, the Advisor provides links to state-specific resources by integrating with the National Resource Directory (NRD), a web-based directory managed collaboratively by the U.S. Departments of Labor, Defense and Veterans Affairs.

Veterans Preference Points
Veteran preference – Veteran preference is only applicable upon original entry. Persons who were engaged in the military service of the United States for a period of at least one year of active duty and who were honorably discharged therefrom, or who are now or have been members on inactive or reserve duty in such military or naval service, shall be preferred for appointment to and employment with the fire department and all other departments within the municipality.
Scoring of Preferences - The commission shall give preference for original appointments to persons meeting the eligibility for veteran preference points by adding 5 points to the final grade for the recognized preference achieved. The commission shall determine the number of preference points for all categories except veteran preference.

Civil Service Exams
Military personnel who, in connection with current service, have military orders that indicate their unavailability due to military service the day of a Civil Service examination should contact the Human Resources Division to request a make-up written examination (see address and business hours below). To request a make-up, submit an application for an open position and request such accommodation in writing (e-mail is acceptable), with a copy of your military orders attached to: Elizabeth Borman at the City of Urbana address at the bottom of the page or e-mail: email@example.com. Please include in your letter your e-mail address, daytime base phone number and/or name and phone number of a friend or family member with whom you have regular contact and entrust with your personal communication.
