Main Street Road Closure

Main Street from Scottswood Drive to University Avenue will be closed to through traffic starting at 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 and ending at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2016, weather permitting, for paving of the pavement.

Springfield Avenue Road Closure

The Springfield Avenue Sanitary Sewer Extension has been awarded by the City of Urbana to Stark Excavating, Inc. The project award amount is $82,174.00. This project is funded by the Sanitary Sewer Benefit Tax.

Weather permitting, this project will require the closure of all lanes on Springfield Avenue between McCullough Street and Birch Street starting on Thursday, October 13, 2016 at 7:00 a.m. through Friday, October 28, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. Access to all driveways will be maintained throughout construction.

A detour route will be used to guide traffic around the construction site via Green Street from Lincoln Avenue to Race Street. Traffic control will be in place to guide motorists.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you for your cooperation while this improvement is in progress.

Periodic Lane Closures on Various Streets

The 2016 Concrete Patching Project – Part 2 has been awarded by the City of Urbana to Beniach Construction Company from Tuscola, Illinois. The project award amount is $240,862. This project is being funded with City Capital Replacement and Improvement Funds.

The project consists of pavement patching; curb and gutter removal and replacement; crack sealing and other miscellaneous work on portions of Tatman Court, Industrial Circle, Lierman Avenue, and Elm Street. Periodic lane closures can be expected on the listed streets starting Monday, October 10, 2016 and ending Friday, November 18, 2016.

University Avenue Lane Closure

Weather permitting, the outside lane for westbound traffic on University Avenue will be closed between Harvey Street and Goodwin Avenue starting on Monday, October 10, 2016 at 7:00 a.m. through Friday, October 14, 2016 at 5:00 p.m. University Avenue will remain open to through traffic at all times during the project.

Traffic control will be in place to guide motorists through the areas where travel is reduced to one lane.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you for your cooperation while this work is in progress.

Project Goal: The City’s intent is to retain an architectural firm with the qualifications and staff resources necessary to perform planning, designing, bidding, and construction oversight phases of various projects deemed to be in the best interest of the City. The City is looking for a firm with the capability to also provide added value services including, but not limited, to structural engineering, security consultation, technology consultation, interior design, etc.

Florida Avenue and Race Street Lane Closures

Weather permitting, lane closures on Florida Avenue from west of Philo Road to James Cherry Drive can be expected starting at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016 until 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2016.

Weather permitting, lane closures on Race Street from Meadow Drive to Florida Avenue can be expected starting at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, October 3, 2016 until 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2016.

All roadways will maintain two way traffic and local access to residences at all times. Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas.

Main Street Lane Closure at Intersection with Maple Street

Weather permitting, the center turn lane for traffic on East Main Street will be closed between Urbana Avenue and North Maple Street from Monday, October 3, 2016 at 9:00 A.M. to 3:30 p.m. until Friday, October 7, 2016 for installation of a new water main. East Main Street will remain open to two-way traffic at all times during the lane closure.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you for your cooperation while this construction is in progress.

Urbana High School 5K Run/Walk

Urbana High School will be conducting a 5K Run/Walk Fundraiser on Sunday, October 2, 2016 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The run/walk portion of the event will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The race will begin at the intersection of Washington Street and Broadway Avenue and will take the following route:

  • North on Broadway to California
  • West on California to Coler
  • North on Cedar to Illinois
  • West on Illinois to Coler
  • South on Coler to Washington
  • East on Washington to Orchard
  • South on Orchard to Pennsylvania
  • West on Pennsylvania to Busey
  • South on Busey to Delaware
  • East on Delaware to Race
  • North on Race to Pennsylvania
  • West on Pennsylvania to Carle
  • North on Carle to Indiana
  • West on Indiana to Douglas
  • North on Douglas to Iowa
  • East on Iowa to Race
  • South on Race to Michigan
  • East on Michigan to Broadway

The route will be closed to traffic for the duration of the run/walk event. Local access will be allowed, but please expect minor delays. All streets will be reopened by 12:00 p.m.

Zuppke Dr., Mills Dr., & Cureton Dr. Road Closures

The south intersection approaches at Zuppke Drive, Mills Drive and Cureton Drive along Mumford Drive will be closed to traffic starting at 7:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2016 until 5:00 p.m. Friday, October 7, 2016 weather permitting, for pavement patching.

  • Coler Ave – Fairview Ave to North of Bradley Ave
  • Cottage Grove Ave – Main St to Philo Rd transition
  • Crestwood Dr – Lynn St to Cottage Grove Ave
  • Crystal Lake Dr – Broadway Ave to Cunningham Ave
  • Elm St – West of Dodson Dr to Dodson Dr
  • Fairlawn Dr – Anderson St to Cottage Grove Ave
  • Glover Ave – Washington St to Oregon St
  • Hawthorne Dr – Anderson St to Fairlawn Dr
  • Lynn St – Fairlawn Dr to North of Crestwood Dr
  • Pfeffer Rd – Washington St to Main St
  • Wabash Ave – Crestwood Dr to Washington St
  • Washington St – East of Dodson Dr to Pfeffer Rd

Due to weather constraints, this work is scheduled to be completed Friday, October 7th.

Smith Road Closure

The 2016 HMA Resurfacing Project has been awarded by the City of Urbana to Open Road Paving Company from Urbana, Illinois. The project award amount is $596,000. This project is being funded by a combination of the City Capital Replacement and Improvement Funds and Local Gas Tax Funds.

The project consists of pavement patching; curb and gutter removal and replacement; sidewalk ramp removal and replacement; pavement resurfacing; pavement marking; and other miscellaneous work on portions of Mumford Drive, Vine Street, Race Street, Smith Road and Main Street. Periodic lane closures can be expected on all the streets starting Friday, September 16, 2016 and ending Friday, October 28, 2016. The project is scheduled to be complete by October 28, 2016.

Smith Road between Main Street and University Avenue will be closed to through traffic starting at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, September 19, 2016 and ending 5:00 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2016, weather permitting, for pavement patching.

Urbana High School Homecoming Parade Route

The Urbana High School Homecoming Parade will take place on Friday, September 16, 2016. Race Street from Michigan Avenue to Iowa Street will be closed to through traffic beginning at 1:00 p.m. through the start of the parade at 3:00 p.m. The parade will end at approximately 4:00 p.m.

Traffic along the parade route will only be obstructed for the short time it takes for the parade to clear the area.

The route for the parade is as follows: 

  • North on Race Street from Iowa Street to Washington Street 
  • East on Washington Street to Race Street
  • North on Race Street to Main Street
  • East on Main Street to Vine Street
  • South on Vine Street to Washington Street
  • West on Washington Street to Broadway Avenue (into the High School parking lot)
