Oregon Street Closure

Oregon Street from Goodwin Avenue to Gregory Street will be closed beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 3, 2014 until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2014 for the End of Spring Semester Block Party Concert.

Urbana Grand Prix Street Closures

The following streets will be closed from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 4, 2014 for the Urbana Grand Prix:

• Park Street from Broadway Avenue to Central Avenue

• Broadway Avenue from Park Street to Stebbins Drive

Ash Street Improvement Project

Weather permitting, the Ash Street Improvement Project will begin construction on Monday, May 5, 2014.

This project consists of removing the existing oil and chip pavement, concrete pavements, curbs, driveways, sidewalks and then installing a new concrete pavement with new curb and gutter, sidewalk ramps and drainage improvements. The Contractor is Otto Baum Company, Inc. from Morton, Illinois. The project cost of $185,000 is being funded by the Urbana Park District (43%) and the City of Urbana (57%). The City’s share will be paid with Local Motor Fuel Tax and Stormwater Utility Fee funds. The limits of the project are from University Avenue to the alley north of Park Street and include the intersection of Park Street and Ash Street. The project will be constructed in one stage and will take approximately 6 weeks to complete. Final restoration will complete the project in mid to late June.

Florida and Philo Intersection Improvement Project

Weather permitting, the Florida and Philo Intersection Improvement Project will begin construction on Friday, May 2, 2014.

This project consists of removing the existing traffic signals, sidewalk ramps and curbs and then installing new traffic signals and street lighting, construction of curb bump outs, new sidewalk ramps, and miscellaneous drainage improvements. The Contractor is Champaign Signal and Lighting Company, Inc. from Urbana, Illinois. The project cost of $375,000 is being funded by the State Motor Fuel Tax Fund. The location of the project is the intersection of Florida Avenue and Philo Road and extends approximately 400 feet in all directions from the intersection to remove medians and install new pavement markings. The project will take approximately 4 months to complete. Final restoration will complete the project in late August of 2014.

Broadway Avenue Closure

On Sunday, April 27, 2014, Broadway Avenue from Main Street to Elm Street will be closed from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. for the University YMCA Bike Polo Tournament.

South Busey Avenue Road Closure

Cross Construction will be installing a sanitary manhole on Busey Avenue between Nevada Street and Washington Street.

Weather permitting, Busey Avenue will be closed to through traffic between Nevada Street and Washington Street from 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014.

All residents along South Busey Avenue will be able to access their properties during the sewer repair.

Update: Airport Road Opening

Beginning at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 12, Airport Road will be opened the full length of the project from Captiva Street to Somerset Drive.


The project consisted of the reconstruction of Airport Road from just west of Captiva Street to just east of Somerset Drive within the city limits. The proposed work entailed reshaping the existing base to allow for placement of a new hot-mix asphalt surface. The reconstructed road has a suburban look with roadside ditches and curb and gutter at select locations. The total length of the project is 3,674 feet.

Airport Road Public Open House

The City of Urbana will hold a Public Open House on Thursday, April 3rd, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at the Urbana Civic Center, 108 E. Water Street to provide information concerning the upcoming Airport Road East Reconstruction Project. The Open House will be conducted on an informal basis; no formal presentation is planned. Exhibits, plans and aerial photography of the proposed improvements will be available for viewing during the entire time. Staff from the City of Urbana Engineering Division will be available to discuss the project and answer questions. All persons interested in this project are invited to attend this meeting.

Consolidated Social Service Funding Applications Available

Non-profit organizations seeking funds to operate social service programs benefiting Urbana residents may apply to the Consolidated Social Service Funding (CSSF) pool.  Funds may be used for both services to clients and program operating costs.  For Fiscal Year 2013-2014, the City of Urbana and Cunningham Township jointly provided $265,000 in social service funds in support of over 25 local programs.

Applications will be available on Monday, March 10, 2014 at the following locations:                                                                     

  • City of Urbana, Community Development Srvices, 400 S. Vine St., Urbana
  • Cunningham Township Supervisor's Office, 205 W. Green St., Urbana

Anderson Street Becomes Northbound One-Way in Front of Wiley School

In order to improve safety and efficiency in student drop-off and pick-up at Wiley School, officials from the City of Urbana and Urbana School District 116 are announcing a change in traffic flow beginning Monday, March 10, 2014.

Anderson Street from Florida Avenue to Pennsylvania Avenue will become a northbound one-way street from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on school days.

The Urbana Police Department will be on site during the first few days of this change to assist with the traffic flow.

Notice of Availability for Public Review & Comment - City of Urbana & Urbana HOME Consortium Draft FY 2014-2015 Annual Action Plan

There will be a public hearing on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 7 p.m in the Urbana City Building to receive comments and suggestions on the Draft FY 2014-2015 Annual Action Plan. Persons with disabilities needing services for this hearing should contact Grants Management Division at 384-2447 (TDD 384-2360) or the City’s Americans With Disabilities Act Coordinator at 384-2466.

The Annual Action Plan is the City of Urbana’s budget for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Programs. The Plan also includes budgets for HOME Programs by the Cities of Champaign and Urbana, and Champaign County, which make up the Urbana HOME Consortium.
