Goodwin Avenue Named Project of the Year
The City of Urbana’s Goodwin Avenue Pedestrian and Bicyclist Safety Improvement was recently named a Public Works Project of the Year for 2010 by the Illinois Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA).
The Goodwin Avenue project was located on the campus of the University of Illinois and the proposed improvements were consistent with the Campus Area Transportation Study (CATS) mission statement: “To better accommodate pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicle movements in a more user-friendly environment.” This project was a demonstration project for pedestrian and bicyclist safety improvements that can be applied throughout the entire campus.
The APWA awards program was established to recognize outstanding individuals, groups and organizations. By recognizing professional contributions, public works professionals promote an atmosphere of mutual respect and provide a way to grow and achieve. The awards recognize the partnership between the managing agency, the consultant/architect/engineer, and the contractor who, working together, complete public works projects.
The Goodwin Avenue project is a great example of the partnership between various stakeholders. The project was a partnership between the City of Urbana, the University of Illinois, the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, Clark Dietz, Inc. and Cross Construction.
Representatives from the Public Works Department were presented with a plaque at the Annual Illinois Chapter Conference Luncheon on Friday May 7, 2010.
