Shared Lane Markings on Philo Road

City of Urbana Public Works crews will be painting a new bicycle traffic control device on Philo Road between Colorado Avenue and Windsor Road the week of June 7th.  The Shared Lane Marking is used in traffic lanes that are too narrow to be shared side-by-side by bicyclists and passing motorists.

The Shared Lane Markings on Philo Road will

• Alert road users of the lateral location bicyclists are likely to occupy within the traveled way.
• Assist bicyclists with lateral positioning in lanes that are too narrow for a motor vehicle and a bicycle to travel side-by-side within the same travel lane.
• Encourage safe passing of bicyclists by motorists, and
• Reduce incidence of wrong-way bicycling.
