Have you heard “Rumors” spreading at Urbana High School? The UHS drama club invites you to their fall production of Neil Simon’s hilarious comedy, Rumors November 3-6 at 7pm.
In the opening of the show, several successful couples are invited to a posh anniversary party for their best friends Myra and Charley Brock. Upon arrival they discover that there are no servants, the hostess is missing, and the host, also the Deputy Mayor of New York, has been shot in the earlobe! Given their upper class status, the guests do everything possible to conceal the truth from the police and media. As more and more guests arrive, the story suddenly takes on a life of its own and all those guests who weren’t supposed to know anything are now all sworn to secrecy not to tell anyone else.
Most of the humor of the first act stems from the confusion, miscommunication and misdirection of who knows what and what they might “accidentally” tell someone else. The climax of the play, not to be missed, is in act two when Lenny Ganz, one of the guests who wasn’t supposed to know the secret, poses as the injured host and in a long monologue sets everything straight, stunning the rest of the cast and the audience alike.
Directed by Tim Broeker, the cast features Annie Valocchi, Derraun Barbee, Lily Smith, Sam Warren, Amy Shea, Nic Morse, Abby Taylor, Noah Gehrmann, Jazzlyn Carter and Will Andresen.
Neil Simon once said, “Youth has comic potential. Entering adulthood is hilarious and middle-age tragedy is a riot.” “Rumors” is the show that proves what Simon says is absolutely true.
The uproariously entertaining farce will be presented at the Urbana High School Cobb Auditorium located at 1002 S. Race St., Urbana. Rumors runs Wednesday November 3 through Saturday November 6 at 7pm. Tickets are $6 for adults. This play contains some adult language and situations and may not be appropriate for young children.
