Black History Month Specials on UPTV
Wesley Snipes narrates A Great and Mighty Walk, a film exploring the life and times of African-American historian John Henrik Clarke, one of several Black History Month specials on UPTV.
A Great and Mighty Walk is both a biography of Clarke himself--a noted African-American historian, scholar and Pan-African activist--and an overview of 5,000 years of African and world history. From ancient Egypt and Africa's other great empires, Clarke moves through Mediterranean borrowings, the Atlantic slave trade, European colonization, the development of the Pan-African movement, and present-day African-American history to propose an Afrocentric approach to the past and present. The film will air on Saturday, February 12 at 8:30pm, with rebroadcasts Sunday 2/13 at 11 pm, Tuesday 2/15 at 1:30pm, and the night of Thursday 2/17 immediately following the regular broadcast of Speak Cafe at 11:30pm.
Also being seen this month is the film The Black Candle, a landmark documentary film that uses Kwanzaa as a vehicle to explore and celebrate the African-American experience. Narrated by world renowned poet Maya Angelou and directed by award-winning author and filmmaker M.K. Asante, The Black Candle is an inspirational story about the struggle and triumph of family, community, and culture. The Black Candle will be seen Thursday evening, 2/17 at 8:30pm, over UPTV. Our thanks to UPTV member and producer Aaron Ammons for making these films available for broadcast.
