21ST CENTURY LEARNING GRANTS IN ACTION AT URBANA SCHOOLS

Through 21st Century funding received in October of 2011, Urbana School District was able to create two community learning centers at Leal Elementary and Urbana High School. These programs provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math, and offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs.

The 21st Century Community Learning Center for Urbana Schools is an opportunity for Urbana High School students and families to participate in enrichment classes, receive additional academic support, and explore various career opportunities while remaining at UHS after the school day. Classes are offered Monday through Thursday from 3:30-5:30pm and cover a broad range of topics such as, cooking, ACT test prep, art and design, Pre-CNA, resume writing and interview skills, fitness classes and many more.

At Leal Elementary, the SPLASH Jr program also provides after-school enrichment from Monday-Thursday. Classes include theatre, film making, fitness, arts and crafts, homework help and more. Much like SPLASH at the middle school level, activities are run by staff from the Urbana Park District. A sack dinner is provided to all students who participate in SPLASH Jr.
