Industrial Zoning District Split
The City of Urbana is undertaking a zoning ordinance amendment and a rezoning to change all current Industrial district designation in to two new districts: a Light Industrial/Office (IN-1) district and a Heavy Industrial district (IN-2). The purpose is to better recognize the nature and needs of industrial businesses while insuring that these operations remain compatible with adjacent uses.
This change will bring the zoning ordinance and map more into conformance with the 2005 Urbana Comprehensive Plan, which lays out which areas should become Light Industrial/Office and which will become Heavy Industrial. With the new districts, residential areas will be buffered from more intense uses.
The Urbana Plan Commission will hold a public hearing regarding the proposed zoning ordinance text amendment and zoning map amendments on Thursday, May 10, 2012, at 7:30 PM in the Urbana City Council Chambers (400 S. Vine St). The Plan Commission will make a recommendation on the cases, which will be considered by the Urbana City Council at a future meeting.
Detailed information on the proposed policy changes can be found at the Industrial Zoning District Split webpage.
