Urbana Elementary Schools Participate in Battle of the Books

Date: April 21, 2012 - 10:30am

Yankee Ridge will conclude its 3rd year of Battle of the Books with a school-wide competition on Wednesday, April 11 at 2:00pm. Yankee Ridge’s program has grown each year and this year there are 70 students participating with 7 great teams.

Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to encourage students to read quality literature. Teams of students read all the books on the list with the goal of having at least two “experts” for each of the books. This year each team needed to complete 30 books chosen from the Monarch, Blue Stem, and Rebecca Caudill Award lists. Then each group works as a team to answer questions testing their knowledge of the books during the “battles”.

Following this will be the district competition where teams from Yankee Ridge, Wiley and Leal will try to prove who has the most outstanding readers during the competition on April 21 at 10:30am in the Urbana Free Library. There are 180 students from all three schools with 19 total district teams. The Urbana Free Library has been very helpful in supporting the schools.
