Holiday Safety

Watch Children

Keep matches and lighters out of children’s reach. Teach young children to stay away from candles, fireplaces, and space heaters.

Holiday Lights

Be sure both indoor and outdoor lights bear the label of a testing laboratory. Replace any light sets that cracked or frayed cords, or loose connections. Do not overload outlets or run extension cords under carpets. Do not allow cords to become pinched. Unplug all lights before going to bed.

Choose Safe Toys

When buying presents for children, avoid those that could present a choking hazard, or be highly flammable. Make sure electronic toys bear a fire safety label from an independent testing laboratory. Keep electric toys away from Christmas trees and decorations.

Candles

Make sure all candles are in their proper order, and are not left unattended. Make sure to extinguish candles before leaving the area.

Party Safety

Use flame retardant materials and decorations. Keep an eye on those who are smoking and drinking. Check couches and chairs for cigarettes that might have fallen in them before retiring for the evening. Don’t let friends drive under the influence of alcohol.

Christmas Trees

Choose a fresh tree. If you are not cutting the tree yourself, buy one that is not shedding its needles. Cut your tree at an angle. Put it securely in a large, deep, non-tip stand. Set up your tree away from exits, fireplaces, and heat sources. Be sure your tree is watered often. Remove the tree from your home as soon as possible. If you are using an artificial tree make sure that it is labeled as being flame retardant.

Space Heaters

Space heaters need space. Keep heaters at least three feet from furniture, beds clothing, and other combustible items. Always use the proper fuel for liquid filled heaters. Make sure that the area is vented according to manufacturers recommendation. Refill in a well ventilated area only after heaters are cooled.
