Architectural and Historical Description |
| 605 W. Main is Queen Anne style house which is similar to many of its neighbors on the Main Street. The house was built in 1890 at a grand scale. The house has a typical asymmetrical composition, a complex roof line, and varying wall surface materials. The main feature is the soaring square tower which marks the entrance to the house. Small gables, supported with brackets and covered in shingles, protrude from the roof of the tower. The eaves of the tower roof are covered in a unique V-shape shingle pattern. The house also has several steeply sloped gable roofs and a one-story entry porch that wraps around two sides of the house. The porch roof is supported by decorative spindles and solid triangular brackets. A fish scale shaped frieze runs between the brackets and diagonal latticework decorates the base of the porch. A balustrade on the porch is absent. A common feature of Queen Anne style houses is the use of differentiation of wall materials. 605 W. Main has horizontal wood siding which is painted a pale sea foam green color. White banding emphasizes the level changes horizontally and the placement of windows vertically. The main gable has a variation of shingle patterns including fish scale, diamond, and hexagon shapes which are arranged in an ombre of pastel pink, orange, and yellow. 605 W. Main also has a variety of window types and sizes, which is typical of Queen Anne style houses. The window types including large casement, small casement, double-hung, and stained glass. The house has a small exterior second story porch. The northwest corner of the first story of the house is a bay window with beveled edges and the second story wall surface is square so that the corner extends over the bay window, a common feature of Queen Anne houses. | |
| This house was built for John H. Savage, who was a prominent banker in Urbana at the turn of the century. In the 1980s, the house was subdivided into apartment units. | |
