Disabled Parking
Vehicles that display the proper disabled identification can park in spaces clearly marked "Disabled or Handicapped Parking" or for free at any metered space, with the exclusion of short term meters (30 minutes and under).
Vehicles displaying disabled placards or plates must obey "restricted and prohibited" parking regulations. The access area of designated spaces (striped area) is not valid parking for any vehicle.
The owner of a disabled plate or placard must be riding in the vehicle when utilizing a disabled parking space and when parking at meters and not paying the meter. Misuse of disabled parking spaces can result in fines and revocation of the plate or placard.
The City of Urbana can issue a temporary disabled parking placard (90 days maximum) to qualified persons living in the Urbana-Champaign area that submit a completed Persons with Disabilities Certification for Parking Placard application. Authorization by a physician is required.
Permanent and temporary disabled parking permits are issued by the Illinois Secretary of State, Driver's License Facility, 2401 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign, IL 61820, (217) 278-3344.
