The Recycling Process: Multifamily Program
Collection
Recyclables are collected at every multifamily dwelling in Urbana by the City’s recycling contractor, Community Resource, Inc.
Multifamily dwellings include apartment homes, dormitories, sororities, fraternities and senior living homes with 5 or more units.
Currently there are 9,590 multifamily units in the City of Urbana.
Like U•CYCLE’s curbside program, a “single-stream” collection method is used, where acceptable papers and containers can be mixed together.
Loading/Shipping
After collection, recyclables are brought to Community Resource, Inc. in Urbana.
Recyclables are emptied onto the floor of a bay, hand sorted and baled.
Processing
Commodities collected in the program are sent to end markets for processing.
