Sculpture Dedication of "Landing" as part of the Philo Road Beautification Project
Urbana invites the public to the dedication of the sculpture “Landing” by Cecilia Lueza as part of the Philo Road Beautification Project
The City of Urbana invites the public to attend a dedication of the sculpture entitled, Landing, on Tuesday, June 1st, at 1:00 PM. Landing is the fourth sculpture to be installed in Urbana this spring for a two-year placement. Cecilia Lueza, a sculptor based in St. Petersburg, FL, will be installing the piece on the corner of Philo Road and Florida Avenue, as part of the City’s Philo Road Beautification Project and the Urbana Sculpture Project. The public is invited to meet the artist and learn more about the piece on site on Tuesday, June 1st, at 1:00 PM.
In 2009, the City launched the Urbana Sculpture Project and received 98 sculpture proposals that were considered for installation in four locations in Urbana in 2010. Through a selection process with two different juries reviewing applications, four sculptures were selected based on artistic quality and ability to integrate and enhance each location. Landing is the second piece to be placed on Philo Road as part of this project. The first piece is Prism Arc VI, by Carl Billingsley, on display on the corner of Philo Road and Colorado Avenue.
Other sculptures installed as part of the project include Fanfare by Shawn Morin, on display in the Iron Post courtyard on the corner of Elm Street and Race Street, and Bench 9 by Barry Hehemann on the corner of Green Street and Cedar Street, adjacent to the Urbana Free Library.
The Urbana Sculpture Project is part of the Urbana Public Arts Program, whose aim is to create a city where all residents can engage with the arts in its many forms, and where art is an integral part of the civic environment.
