Students at Leal Elementary School Will Help Break a Guinness World Record

Date: October 12, 2011 - 11:25am to 1:45pm

On October 12th, Leal Elementary School in Urbana is going to participate in “Let’s Jump”—a Guinness Book of World’s Records attempt to break the record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period. It is part of an initiative sponsored by Michelle Obama and National Geographic Kids Magazine.

To break the record more than 20,000 people worldwide need to complete one minute of jumping jacks in events held between 3 p.m. ET October 11, 2011, and 3 p.m. ET October 12, 2011.

To contribute to this effort, each Leal student from Kindergarten to 5th grade will do one minute of continuous jumping jacks along with their classmates in sessions during their lunch recess. Independent witnesses and timekeepers will be on hand to document the attempt which will then be submitted to National Geographic Kids Magazine and the Guinness Book of World Records for verification. This is a fun way Leal School is encouraging kids to get moving and be active as well to build community spirit by participating in something fun together. The students have been practicing jumping jacks in their gym classes for several weeks to get ready for the big day and are eager to be part of that world record!

WHO: 430 Leal Students will participate in the challenge by doing one minute of jumping jacks in five groups.
