Medical Insurance Plans
In 2017, our new medical insurance provier will be Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois. Employees will continue to have the option of the Standard (80/20) plan or Premium (100%) plan, both of which provide coverage for expenses such as doctor’s office visits, preventive care, prescription drugs, and hospitalization. Most preventive care services are covered at 100% and you do not need a referral from a primary care provider to see a specialist. Visit the Plan Options page for more details.
City of Urbana health coverage is available to employees working at least 20 hours per week in a regular (non-temporary or seasonal) position. Employees who typically work fewer than 40 hours will have pro-rated benefits.
What's Changing?
- Our new Blue Cross/Blue Shield (BCBS) plans are customized PPO (Participating Provider Option) plans.
- A PPO lets you choose where you go for care, without a referral from a primary care physician or having to only use providers in your plan's provider network.
- Most Carle primary care providers (Internal Medicine, Family Practice, Adult Medicine and Pediatrics) in Champaign-Urbana are not in-network providers, but most specialists are.
- To see if your provider is in the BCBS network, visit the BCBS Provider Finder. In the drop-down box under Plan Network, select the last option: Participating Provider Option. You can also download a list of Primary Care Providers within a 20-mile radius of C-U.
- If you stay in-network, your costs are lower. If you choose a provider outside the network, your costs will be higher.
