Neighborhood Meeting #4: Allowed Uses in the R-7 District
The R-7 zoning district contains all of Urbana’s historic and architecturally-significant fraternity and sorority houses. The City of Urbana’s Planning Division would like to explore options to help preserve these important buildings and ensure their long-term viability for decades to come. As a resident of the West Urbana Neighborhood, we would love to hear your thoughts on how we can make that happen by making changes to our zoning ordinance.
The goal of the R-7, University Residential zoning district is to provide areas for dormitories and rooming houses near the University of Illinois, and to insure the longevity, architectural character, and use of the existing buildings in the district. While the zoning regulations in the R-7 district have done a good job of preventing the buildings in the district from being torn down, those same regulations make reuse and, in turn, preservation of these important buildings more difficult.
Staff is drafting a list of uses that would be allowed in existing fraternity, sorority, and rooming houses in the R-7 district. Please refer to the allowed uses in the MOR, Mixed-Office Residential district (linked here). Would these uses be okay in the R-7 district: yes, yes – only small scale, or no. Please email any comments, concerns or questions to Kat Trotter at email@example.com. We will discuss the list of potential allowed uses at the upcoming neighborhood meeting.
Please join us for a (virtual) neighborhood meeting on Tuesday, March 29th at 7:00 p.m. to share your thoughts and ideas.
