A Solo Exhibition of Works by Carol Alison

The Urbana Free Library and the City of Urbana Arts and Culture Program invite the public to a Boneyard Arts Festival meet and greet with exhibiting artist, Carol Alison whose collection "ramble.on." is on display at the library April-May, 2022.

Artist's Statement:

"This series started as a singular inspiration from graphics found on AMF-era Harley Davidson gas tanks. Motorcycles are a work of art in their own right, and those early graphics have a special place in HD history.

Once I started incorporating those graphics into my own abstract work, I discovered that together it all looked much like a map. I am an intuitive painter and an avid camper, hiker, and all-around nature geek so I started creating my own maps.

I soon realized I was creating maps related to my own personal spiritual evolution and my own journey to freedom and peace. Freedom from others' expectations, from my own expectations, from societal indoctrination, my own traumas, and my own difficult histories. To ramble on to a new narrative that I'm fully in charge of.

I am predominantly a mixed media artist and these pieces combine acrylic ink, acrylic paint, graphite, paint marker, raw canvas, and paper. The title of this exhibit is "ramble. on." which is inspired by Led Zeppelin's song Ramble On. Music is a large piece of my creative process, and this song tells a story about "going round the world, gotta find my girl. Find the queen of all my dreams", but in this particular context, it's really about finding myself and my own way forward. I have used a few maps of hikes that are precious to me as references but mostly the botanicals and the maps are just reflections of places I've been."
