Mural Ribbon Cutting

Date: April 22, 2022 - 11:30pm
Community members: You're invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Urbana's newest mural this Friday, April 22 at 11:30 a.m. at Cunningham Township Building | 205 W. Green Street, Urbana! The Urbana Free Library is coordinating the installation of a new mural across the street from the Library on two sides of the Cunningham Township building. Thanks to a partnership with the Cunningham Township Supervisor's Office and generous funding from a City of Urbana Arts and Culture Grant and The Urbana Free Library Foundation, Urbana's newest mural will be unveiled on Friday, April 22 at 11:30 a.m. The community is invited to a ribbon cutting ceremony to showcase the new mural painted on the Cunningham Township building. The mural was designed by professional muralist Langston Allston with input from members of the community during sessions at The Urbana Free Library last spring. The mural was painted by community members working with Allston over two weeks this April. Danielle Chynoweth, Cunningham Township Supervisor, said, "I'm thrilled that we can continue to grow our partnership with the Library to make a gathering space that is welcoming for all, especially Township participants who are struggling with housing and food insecurity. Langston Allston has created a radiant, nurturing design that celebrates mutual support and connection." One mural will face the Solidarity Garden next to the Township, developed as a collaboration between the Township and Library. Library Director Celeste Choate agreed and added that she "is delighted at how the mural incorporates the love of reading in its design. We hope that when people see this inspiring art, they feel a sense of belonging and community connection.” Langston Allston has been creating public art and showing work nationally since 2017. His portfolio includes a residency with the National Public Housing Museum in Chicago, a duo show with Demond Melancon at MOCADA in Brooklyn, and a multimedia collaboration with poet Kevin Coval on his book Everything Must Go.
