Urbana Firefighters Ratify Tentative Labor Deal
The International Association of Firefighters, Local #1147, has ratified a tentative agreement for a new labor contract with the City of Urbana. The three-year agreement includes a 1% increase retroactive from July 1, 2017, a 1% increase effective July 1, 2018, and a 2% increase effective July 1, 2019.
Under the new contract, eligible firefighters will receive an additional vacation day in the final year of the agreement. It also includes language that improves firefighter training and streamlines the promotion process in light of upcoming changes to State certification requirements.
Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin said she appreciated the IAFF’s willingness to negotiate an agreement that takes the City’s economic realities into account.
“Over the past several years, the City and IAFF leadership have worked hard to nurture a collaborative and productive working relationship,” Marlin said. “This agreement represents a significant milestone in that endeavor.”
"As discussed in my budget message, we are facing significant long-term financial challenges. The modest wage increases provided over the three-year life of this agreement reflect a shared commitment to building a strong financial foundation to support growth and development in the future,” Marlin noted. “I’m very proud of the exceptional fire protection, emergency medical services, and education provided to Urbana residents and businesses by IAFF Local #1147. Our public safety officials play a crucial role in ensuring high quality of life and confidence in our community.”
The Urbana City Council is expected to review and vote on the agreement at its Tuesday, September 5th meeting.
