Artist of the Corridor: Women Who Painted

The City of Urbana's Arts and Culture Program and The Urbana Free Library invite you to an opening reception for Women Who Painted, an Artist of the Corridor Exhibition on March 5th, from 5:30-7p.m. at the City Hall (400 S. Vine Street).

Refreshments will be served. Free and open to the public! The exhibit will be on display throughout the month of March in honor of Women's History Month.

Women Who Painted is a collection of digital and oil paintings by local artist, Paula McCarty. What started out as a desire to learn digital painting by selecting women painters as subjects, evolved into a growing visual archive. In honor of Women’s History Month, Women Who Painted celebrates the work of women visual artists and their impact on the global arts and cultural landscape.

McCarty states, "I hope to bring awareness of these women and their artwork to a modern audience and open a dialogue about their contributions to the history of painting." The work of women artists is often underrepresented in art history books and museums. McCarty intends to readdress history and underscore the significance of these deserving artists.

The exhibit’s corresponding website, https://www.womenwhopainted.com, currently serves to highlight the work and function as an education tool, with links to each artists’ Wikipedia page. She has plans to grow the project by adding more artists and creating other links to resources on the website, strengthening the project as an archive of women painters.

Artist of the Corridor, an initiative by the City of Urbana Arts and Culture Program, is a dual-site exhibition series that features local art in the City Building and The Urbana Free Library. All Artist of the Corridor shows are free and open to the public.
