U-Cycle Collection - Labor Day Holiday

Due to the Labor Day holiday, U-Cycle collections will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.  Monday's U-Cycle route will be collected on Tuesday, Tuesday's route on Wednesday, etc.  Please continue to place recyclables at the street curb by 7:00 a.m.  Questions may be directed to U-Cycle at (217) 384-2302.

Urbana Sweetcorn Festival Street Closures

THE FOLLOWING STREET CLOSURES WILL OCCUR FOR THE ANNUAL SWEETCORN FESTIVAL BEGINNING FRIDAY, AUGUST 23RD, 2019 AND CONTINUING THROUGH SUNDAY, AUGUST 25TH, 2019.

On Friday, August 23rd at 6:00 a.m. the following streets will be closed:

  • Main Street from Vine Street to Cedar Street
  • Walnut Street from Water Street to Main Street
  • Broadway Avenue from Elm Street to Water Street
  • Race Street from Elm Street to Water Street

The Urbana Parking Deck (upper level) will be accessible from South Race to Elm Street at all times.

All streets will be re-opened on Sunday, August 25th, 2019 by noon.

CLOSED: Invitation to Bid: Fiber Optic Cable Installation (1920-02)

The purpose of this work is to install fiber optic cable to connect the Landscape Recycling Center Ticket Booth to the Arbor Division Shop, and therefore to the rest of the City’s network for computer and phones service. The scope of work consists of:

  • installing new conduit and pull boxes;
  • pulling fiber optic cables;
  • splicing into the existing fiber network;
  • preparing fiber optic connections to the interior of the facility;
  • and testing of fiber optic cables inside the facility.

Pavement Work on I-74 begins August 5

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that pavement repairs on Interstate 74 between High Cross Road and Prospect Avenue will begin Monday, August 5.

The work involves milling and resurfacing from High Cross Road to east of Cunningham Avenue in Urbana and microsurfacing from Cunningham Avenue to west of Prospect Avenue in Champaign. Repairs to guardrails also will be performed. The project is expected to last approximately seven (7) weeks and will require nighttime lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, with at least one lane open in each direction at all times.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

West Oregon Street Closure

Weather permitting; West Oregon Street will be closed to thru traffic between South Mathews Avenue and South Goodwin Avenue from 6:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 1, 2019 for a project done by Davis-Houk Mechanical, Inc. for the University of Illinois.

No thru traffic will be permitted on West Oregon Street between South Mathews Avenue and South Goodwin Avenue during the project.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during this project

West Griggs Street Closure

Weather permitting; West Griggs Street will be closed to thru traffic between North Race Street and Wood Street from 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 to 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 7, 2019 for a water main replacement project by Cross Construction for Illinois American Water Company.

No thru traffic will be permitted on West Griggs Street between North Race Street and Wood Street during the closure.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully around this area. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during this time.

Freedom Celebration Parade & 5K Race Street Closures

On Thursday, July 4, 2019, the following streets in Urbana will be closed from 6:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. for the Champaign County Freedom Celebration Parade and 5K race:

  • Florida Avenue from the west City limits (Wright Street extended) to Busey Avenue
  • Lincoln Avenue from Florida Avenue to Green Street
  • Illinois Street from Lincoln Avenue to Goodwin Avenue
  • Gregory Street from Illinois Street to Oregon Street

Independence Day U-Cycle Collection Schedule

Mayor Announces UPD Leadership Appointments

Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin has selected Urbana Police Department Interim Chief Bryant Seraphin to serve as the next Chief of the Urbana Police Department. Seraphin has served as Interim Police Chief since the retirement of Chief Sylvia Morgan in August 2018 and has been a member of the department for over 24 years.

“I’m pleased to appoint Bryant Seraphin as Chief of Police for the City of Urbana,” Marlin said. “For the past nine months while he has served as Interim Chief, I have observed him in many different public and private settings. In each, he has demonstrated a respectful, knowledgeable, and open-minded approach; a willingness to listen; and a commitment to uphold the high professional standards of the Urbana Police Department. As Interim Chief, Mr. Seraphin implemented the use of bodyworn cameras in the police department, worked closely with Urbana District #116 to address school safety issues, and expanded community outreach efforts.”
