McCullough Street Closure

Weather Permitting: The 200 block of North McCullough Street between West Main Street and Griggs Street will be closed to traffic on both directions from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. between Monday, February 18, 2019 and Wednesday, February 20, 2019 due to tree pruning by the Urbana Public Works Arbor Division.

Cedar Street Closure

South Cedar Street will be closed to thru traffic between West High Street and West Illinois Street from 8:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2019 until 4:00 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019 for an emergency sanitary sewer repair by Freds Plumbing.

No thru traffic will be permitted on South Cedar Street between West High Street and West Illinois Street during the closure.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully around this area. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during this time

Iowa Street Closure

Weather Permitting: The 800 block of West Iowa Street between South Busey Avenue and South Lincoln Avenue will be closed to traffic on both directions from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 5, 2019 due to tree pruning by the Urbana Public Works Arbor Division.

Landscape Recycling Center Closed January 30

Due to the harsh weather conditions, the Landscape Recycling Center, 1210 East University Avenue, Urbana, IL, will be closed from 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 until 8 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2019.

In case of an emergency, contact the Urbana Police Department at 217/384-2320.

Please be safe and avoid traveling outside if possible.

Urbana City Offices Closed January 30 2019

The City of Urbana Mayor, Diane Wolfe Marlin, has decided that City facilites will close at 5 p.m. today, January 29, 2019 and will remain closed through Wednesday, January 30, 2019 due to forecasted extreme temperatures.

City offices will reopen as regularly scheduled on Thursday, January 31, 2019.

This includes the Urbana City Building, the Urbana Free Library and Urbana Public works.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning until Thursday at 12 p.m. These predicted subzero temperatures could range anywhere from -29 degrees to -39 degrees Fahrenheit.

The City urges all to please use extreme care and to check on family, friends and neighbors for the duration of this weather event. Safety tips can be found at: www.urbanaillinois.us/extremecold. Please refer to the City’s website, social media, and press releases for further information as it develops.

U-CYCLE Collections Delayed Starting January 30

Due to the extreme cold, the City of Urbana’s curbside U-Cycle collections will not occur on Wednesday, January 30, 2019.

U-Cycle collections will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week. Normal operations will resume on Thursday, January 31, 2019.

  • The Wednesday U-Cycle route will be collected on Thursday;
  • the Thursday U-Cycle route will be collected on Friday;
  • and the Friday U-Cycle route will be collected on Saturday.

As a reminder, please set recycling at the street curb before 7:00 a.m. to ensure collection. We appreciate your cooperation.

Urbana Sidewalk Snow Removal Requirements in Effect

Sidewalk ClearingAt 8:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 17, 2019, the Interim Urbana Public Works Director declared the sidewalk snow and ice removal requirements in effect for the Downtown, University, and South Philo Road snow removal districts.

Due to the winter storm, ice and/or two inches or more of snow has accumulated on sidewalks.  In order to make sidewalks safe for pedestrians, City ordinance requires that public sidewalks, within the defined districts, be cleared by adjacent property owners within 24 hours after the Interim Public Works Director's declaration.  Sidewalks need to be cleared by 8:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2019.  Public sidewalks within these districts, which are not in compliance, could be cleared by the City at the expense of the adjacent property owner, with additional fines and administrative fees applied.
