2018 Surface Seal Street Maintenance Project

The City of Urbana has contracted with Corrective Asphalt Materials, LLC to perform street maintenance on streets throughout the City of Urbana. The locations of streets to be worked on are shown on the attached map.

This work is scheduled to start Monday, August 6, 2018, and end Friday, August 10, 2018, weather permitting.

Traffic will be maintained at all times; however; periodic lane closures and driveway closures for 45 to 60 minutes can be expected the day of the work.

The Contractor will spray material onto the roadway that will then be covered with a blotter material such as sand or limestone. Please go slow through the sealed areas, as the material can be slippery and get onto vehicles. If the sealant does splash onto vehicles, it can be removed by immediately washing the vehicle with soap and water or by using a bug and tar remover. The City will sweep up the loose blotter material after the work is complete.

Lincoln Avenue Speed Limit Reduced to 25 MPH Between Nevada Street & Pennsylvania Avenue

Effective immediately, the speed limit on Lincoln Avenue between Nevada Street and Pennsylvania Avenue is 25 miles per hour. The reduction in the speed limit was approved by the Urbana City Council after City staff conducted a traffic study along the corridor and recommended the reduced speed limit to improve safety in that area.

Although this roadway is adjacent to, but not considered part of the University District, the speed limit reduction is consistent the with University District mission “to better accommodate pedestrian, bicycle, transit, and vehicle movements in a more user-friendly environment.”

Also recommended as part of the study is the installation of flashing enhanced pedestrian warning signs at the north and south ends of the corridor to draw attention to the increase in pedestrian traffic in the area. The installation of the flashing enhanced pedestrian warning signs will occur as part of a later project.

Goodwin Avenue Closure

Goodwin Avenue from Springfield Avenue to Main Street will be closed to through traffic starting 6:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2018, until 9:00 p.m. Thursday, August 2, 2018, weather permitting. Access across Goodwin Avenue at Stoughton Street will be maintained at all times.

Periodic lane closures can also be expected on the south, east, and west legs of the Springfield Avenue and Goodwin Avenue intersection until all work within the vicinity of the intersection is complete.

2018 Full Depth Concrete Patching Project

The City of Urbana has contracted with Feutz Construction Inc. from Paris, Illinois to repair the pavement on all legs of the Springfield Avenue and Goodwin Avenue intersection. The project award amount of $91,750.00 is funded with Capital Replacement and Improvement funds.

This work is scheduled to start Monday, July 30, 2018, and end Friday, August 17, 2018, weather permitting.

Periodic lane closures can be expected on the south, east and west legs of the Springfield Avenue and Goodwin Avenue intersection. The traffic signals at this intersection will be switched to red-flash 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting Monday, July 30, 2018, until all work within the vicinity of the intersection is complete.

A separate press release announcing impacts to traffic on the north leg of the Springfield Avenue and Goodwin Avenue intersection is expected at a later date.

2018 Pavement Marking Project

The City of Urbana has contracted with Varsity Striping & Construction Co. from Champaign, Illinois to perform pavement marking on bicycle and vehicle lanes throughout the City of Urbana. The locations of streets to be worked on are shown on the attached map.

This work is scheduled to occur starting Thursday, July 26, 2018, and ending Friday, August 17, 2018, weather permitting.

This work will occur under a moving operation with occasional lane closures.

The project award amount of $31,160.90 is funded with Capital Replacement and Improvement funds.

2018 Oil & Chip Street Maintenance Project

The City of Urbana has contracted with Illiana Construction from Urbana, Illinois to perform street maintenance on streets throughout the City of Urbana. The locations of streets to be worked on are shown on the attached map.

This work is scheduled to start Tuesday, July 31, 2018, and end Friday, August 17, 2018, weather permitting.

The City will post no parking signs to notify the public of the dates and times during which no parking will be allowed along the edge of the pavement. Local traffic will be maintained as much as possible; however, depending on conditions, streets may be closed for 15 to 30 minutes on the day of the work.

The contractor will put a layer of small gray rock on the street. There will be some dust and loose rock on the street after rock has been placed on the street. The City will sweep up the loose rock after the work is complete.

The City’s EAP program is intended to help employees and their household members deal with personal problems such as alcoholism/substance abuse, family difficulties, stress, monetary/financial problems, legal troubles, family violence and other personal difficulties that might adversely impact their work performance, health, and well-being.

Romine Street Closure

As part of the 2018-2020 Miscellaneous Sewer Repair Contract, and weather permitting, Cross Construction will be making a repair to a City sanitary sewer and will close North Romine Street between Eads Street and Ellis Drive to all thru traffic starting on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 7:00 a.m. through Friday, August 3, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.

Access to all driveways and properties will be maintained during the sewer repair. A detour route utilizing Ellis Drive to North Mathews Avenue to Eads Street will be marked to route traffic around the construction zone.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you for your cooperation while this improvement is in progress.

I-74 Nighttime Ramp Closures at Cunningham Avenue

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that ramp closures on Interstate 74 at the Cunningham Avenue off ramp will occur on July 19th, weather permitting. The closures are necessary for crews to perform skid proofing operations.

Work on I-74 will occur on the eastbound off ramp at Cunningham Avenue. The closure will begin at 9 p.m. and end at 6 a.m on the night of July 19th into the morning of July 20th.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Philo Road Closure

On Sunday, July 22, 2018 Philo Road between Windsor Road and Curtis Road will be closed from 5:00 p.m. through 8:00 p.m. for the Mile at the Pines Races. The intersection of Curtis Road and Philo Road will also be closed to through traffic during this time.

CHAMPAIGN— The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that nighttime closures of the Neil Street and Cunningham Avenue offramps from Interstate 74 will begin July 12. The closures are necessary for crews to perform skid-proofing operations. Work on I-74 will begin at 9 p.m. July 12 on the westbound offramp at Neil Street and the eastbound offramp at Cunningham Avenue and is expected to be finished by 6 a.m. July 13, weather permitting.
