Apply for a Curbana!

The City of Urbana is excited to announce that four Curbanas are available to be requested per an application process and fee for downtown Urbana businesses.

What is a Curbana? A Curbana is an enclosed raised deck structure next to the sidewalk to provide outdoor seating for the public. Called a parklet in other communities, Curbanas are specially named for Urbana.

The Curbana concept is not a new one as Urbana introduced Curbanas in 2014, utilizing the same wooden structures for several years before they fell into disrepair and were no longer safe to use. While considering how to help support businesses trying to recover from the pandemic, City staff researched how to bring back this popular concept. Due to great feedback from businesses and the general public the City is happy to offer Curbanas for 2022. Downtown businesses may apply for a Curbana to be installed temporarily outside of their business from June to October of 2022. There are two sizes of Curbanas: 10'x20' that requires one metered parking spot and 10x40' that require two metered parking spots. See attachment for Curbana application. While the Curbanas use a few parking spaces, there is ample parking available at the public parking garage located at 111 West Main Street and in other lots in downtown as shown in the map below. Employees and others needing longer-term parking are encouraged to rent spaces in the garage or another lot to allow customers to use the on-street spaces.
