Urbana Announces Police Chief Boone's Appointment

Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin announces that Larry Boone, a 33-year law enforcement professional, will become the City of Urbana’s next Chief of Police. The announcement comes after Boone’s appointment to the position was approved unanimously by the Urbana City Council. His current appointment lasts until June 30, 2025. 

 Boone retired as Chief of Police for the Norfolk, VA Police Department in 2022.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to have the opportunity to be only a part of the meaningful change that’s going to occur here in Urbana – I won’t let you down,” Chief Boone said.

Urbana Renews Gold-level Bicycle Friendly Community Status

As National Bike Month comes to a close, the League of American Bicyclists is recognizing 45 cities and towns for earning Bicycle Friendly Community awards, plus five communities that earned Honorable Mentions. Two other communities applied in this round but did not receive recognition. Urbana is one of the five of the communities earning Gold-level awards this round  that are also are renewing Gold-level communities. Only eight of the 45 awardees earned upgrades, with four upgrading to Silver-level status and four upgrading to Bronze from previous Honorable Mentions.

The League of American Bicyclists recognized Urbana with a Gold Bicycle Friendly Community award. In achieving this distinction, Urbana is again recognized as a Gold Level Bicycle Friendly Community in Illinois and part of a select group of communities nationwide to attain this status. Urbana also joins a total of 506 Bicycle Friendly Communities, of various levels, from across the country that are transforming the American landscape.

We are excited to celebrate and recognize the vital role of the Urbana Public Works professionals in building and maintaining the infrastructure that keeps our community thriving. From roads and bridges to water systems and plantings,  our public works department plays a crucial part in enhancing the quality of life for all residents.

This year's National Public Works Week is a time to honor the men and women who dedicate their skills, expertise, and tireless efforts to ensure the smooth functioning of our cities and towns. We applaud their commitment to excellence and their unwavering dedication to public service.

National Police Week 2023

What is National Police Week? 

National Police Week occurs every May. The National Law Enforcement Memorial and Museum will hold ceremonies, including the 35th Annual Candlelight Vigil, to honor the fallen officers whose names have recently been added to the Memorial.

We respect, honor, and thank our Urbana Police Department for their service to our community. 

Locally, this year the Urbana Police Department held a flag ceremony where the Honor Guard Unit raised the Law Enforcement Flag at the Urbana City Building. The flag will remain in place for the remainder of National Police Week.
