Seed Lending Library

The Urbana Free Library is now accepting saved seeds from your garden to get a new collection started! As Library staff gets the Seed Lending Library on its feet, we are only accepting seed this season for “super easy” seed saver plants: tomatoes, herbs, peas, beans, peppers, and lettuces.

If you’re unfamiliar with seed lending, the basic idea is that you plant the seeds, grow the plants, let some go to seed, and then return some of these next-generation seeds for others to borrow. You can get started by checking out books on seed saving from the Library’s collection!

Census 2020 Address Verifying Has Begun

There may be people in your neighborhoods that are very simply identifying addresses for the upcoming Census 2020. They should have an official government ID badge, and explain the purpose of the visit. You may also ask them for a picture ID from another source to confirm their identity. Read Across America Awarded

Altrusa The Urbana Arts & Culture Program is proud to announce that Altrusa International of Champaign Urbana, IL, Inc. was awarded the Letha H Brown Award for the best literacy project for Read Across America at the Altrusa International Convention which was held in Reno, July 17-20.

The Letha H. Brown Literacy Award was established by the International Board of Directors in July 1993, to honor Past International President Letha H. Brown, who, in 1977, introduced literacy as a major emphasis of the organization.

Altrusa is the world’s oldest service club for women and was founded in 1917. It represents over 300 International Service Clubs. The objectives of the award are to stimulate interest in developing active literacy projects, to encourage projects designed to meet specific community needs, and to recognize outstanding club achievement in service to community.
