North Race Street Closure

Weather permitting: North Race Street will be closed to thru traffic between West Main Street and West Griggs Street from 6:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Thursday, September 26, 2019 for a water main replacement project done by Cross Construction for Illinois American Water Company.

Access will be maintained to all properties along North Race Street but no thru traffic will be permitted on North Race Street between West Main Street and West Griggs Street during the project.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during this project.

Silverwood

In celebration of the Day of Peace, the neighborhood encompassed by Silver and Vawter Streets in southern Urbana has recommitted itself to peace. The neighborhood was recently rebranded and has changed their name to Silverwood.

The process started last year when Giovanna Dibenedetto realized that the good people of her neighborhood could no longer accept the violence in the area. So, there were meetings on ideas on how to get this accomplished. They also decided they needed to do what so many successful companies, corporations and even municipalities do: they rebranded their neighborhood and adopted the name "Silverwood." Peace poles were made at the International Day of Peace and Silverwood Neighborhood celebration and will be placed around the community to remind those of the idea that peace works.

Hispanic Heritage Month

HIspanic Heritage Month September 15 to October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. Eight states have Hispanic populations of at least 1 million. These are: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, and Texas.

Head Start Awareness Walk

CCRPC Awareness Walk The Champaign County Regional Planning Commission is eager to announce the first-ever Head Start Awareness Walk, from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Meadowbrook Park in Urbana.

The event is totally free to participate! Drinks and snacks will also be provided!

Help RPC celebrate the great services Head Start provides to children and families in Champaign County. Families, children, and members of the community are welcome to participate. Please register (for FREE) online by October 14, 2019 by clicking on this link.

Household Hazardous Waste Event Registration Begins September 23

The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) has selected Champaign County for a household hazardous waste (HHW) event scheduled on Saturday, October 26, 2019, from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. Registration is required to attend the event in Champaign. Online and phone registration will begin on Monday, September 23, at 8:00 a.m. To register online, please click here. Urbana residents may register by phone at (217) 384-2302.

Items accepted at the event include the following:Chemicals, oil-based paints, paint thinner, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, insecticides, pesticides, lead acid batteries, pharmaceuticals, and similar hazardous waste materials. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collection.

Items not accepted include: Latex-based paint, explosives, propane tanks, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, agricultural chemicals and business waste.
