Urbana Elementary Schools Celebrating Walk 'N' Roll Day

Date: October 3, 2012 - 12:00am

Several elementary schools in Urbana School District #116 will be celebrating Walk ‘n’ Roll day on Wednesday, October 3, 2012. Students, parents and staff from King, Leal, Paine, Wiley and Yankee Ridge will be joining other area elementary schools and other students and parents around the globe in celebrating International Walk to School Day.

Elementary schools throughout the district will be participating in many ways. Most schools will have pre-designated areas for students and parents to meet so they can walk the last few blocks together. Wiley students will stop as a group before the flag to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Yankee Ridge will provide refreshments for the parents and volunteers. Leal students may break out into the Ped Safety Dance song! Students who ride the bus at all the district elementary schools will be dropped off at a designated meeting area to join a group, and schools encourage parents who drive their children to park and walk a few extra blocks as well. In order to help direct traffic, the Urbana Police Department will have an officer stationed at each school building.

Walk ‘n’ Roll day 2012 is part of an annual event sponsored by the Champaign-Urbana Safe Routes to School Project (CU-SRTS Project) which “aims to make walking and bicycling to school safe and appealing for children.” CU-SRTS project is a community based organization with representatives from the CU Mass Transit District (CUMTD), Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, Champaign-Urbana engineering and law enforcement, Champaign and Urbana School Districts, local health agencies, bike clubs and more.
