Acceptable Recyclables & Non-Acceptable Items

Residential Mixed Paper

Any paper that is written upon, read from, or used for packaging including:

  • Newspaper and inserts
  • Cardboard
  • Paperboard (waxed paperboard ok) - such as cereal boxes, frozen food boxes
  • Junk mail
  • Ledgers, file folders or computer paper
  • Magazines, catalogs, phone directories
  • Paperback & hardcover books (please limit to 20 lbs. per setout)
  • Shredded paper (must be placed in paper grocery bag only; may staple bag to contain paper)

Food & Beverage Containers

  • Aluminum cans and foil (clean)
  • Steel cans
  • Aerosol cans (empty), except paint cans!
  • Glass bottles & jars, all colors accepted
  • Six-pack ring carriers (all types accepted)
  • Beverage cartons (milk, juice, etc.)
  • Plastic shopping bags (grocery and retail bags only; must have a #2 or #4 on bag); Bags must be clean, dry and bundled (please place all bags into one bag and tie at top) - NO GARBAGE BAGS ACCEPTED!

Plastic containers - any color plastic food or beverage container, except Styrofoam!

These plastic resin code numbers are accepted:

  • 1 PETE (Polyethylene, Terephthalate): Soft drink & water bottles or food containers
  • 2 HDPE (High Density Polyethylene): Milk jugs, detergent bottles, shopping bags (bundled)
  • 3 V (Polyvinyl Chloride): Health & beauty aide products, cooking oil bottles and household cleaners
  • 4 LDPE (Low Density Polyethylene): Margarine tubs & lids, frozen dessert cups, six-pack rings, shopping bags (bundled)
  • 5 PP (Polypropylene): Yogurt cups, syrup bottles, deli trays, plant pots and caps/lids. Plant pots must be rinsed free of dirt.
  • 6 PS (Polystyrene): Rigid #6 plastics only, such as to-go coffee lids, bakery containers; No Styrofoam
  • 7 OTHER (Other resins): Microwaveable containers and narrow-neck bottles
Please take a moment to:
  • Rinse all containers
  • Leave caps/lids on bottles and jars
  • Remove food box liners or plastic film
  • Flatten all boxes
  • Cut large cardboard to less than 2' x 3'
  • Keep paper fibers dry
  • Keep materials loose in the U-Cart (please don't bag recyclables in garbage bags)

 

Unacceptable Materials

  • No garbage bags - please keep materials loose in U-Cart
  • No food waste/organics
  • No plastic film - Such as Ziploc bags, bread bags, newspaper sleeves
  • No food packaging wrappers (such as chip bags, candy wrappers, fast food wrappers, etc.)
  • No Styrofoam (foam) products - Such as egg cartons, deli or meat trays, packaging "peanuts"
  • No scrap metal 
  • No wood
  • No single-use paper products (such as paper towel, tissue paper, cups/plates)
  • No plastic cutlery
  • No food-soiled boxes (such as pizza boxes, take-out containers)
  • No photographs
  • No hazardous waste (i.e. motor oil, pesticide containers, paint, batteries, etc)
  • No toys
  • No electronic devices
  • No ceramics/mirrors
  • No gift wrap/ribbon/bows
  • No landscape waste
  • No textiles or shoes
  • No medical waste
