Church Street Closure

Church Street from Orchard Street to the intersection of McCullough Street and Park Street will be closed from 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2017 through 7:00 a.m. Thursday, June 22, 2017 for street repairs and maintenance.

CLOSED: Request for Proposal for Canine Trained in Narcotics Detection, Tracking, & Article Searches

The City of Urbana is seeking proposals from qualified vendors for a canine with various training requirements.

Proposals will be accepted no later than 5 p.m. on June 30, 2017.

Questions regarding the request for proposal should be directed to Lt. Rich Surles at the Urbana Police Department. He may be reached via email at surlesrh@urbanaillinois.us or by telephone at 217-384-2330.

The proposal shall include initial training, as well as maintenance training of a canine handler with the same designated canine. Qualification of the vendors shall be made available to the City of Urbana upon demand in order for a proposal to be considered.

Lincoln Avenue Closure

Due to public safety concerns, on Saturday, June 10, 2017 Lincoln Avenue between Iowa Street and Ohio Street will be closed from 7:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. (noon) for an emergency tree removal.

Thank you for your cooperation while this removal is in progress.

Lincoln Avenue Lane Shift

Weather permitting, the northbound lanes on North Lincoln Avenue near West Church Street will be shifted into the turn lane starting at 6:00 a.m. Tuesday June 13, 2017 through 5:00 p.m. Friday June 16, 2017 for an emergency sewer repair done by Cross Construction.

North Lincoln Avenue will remain open to traffic at all times during the closure.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation during this project.

Race Street Closure

On Wednesday, June 7, 2017 Race Street between University Avenue and Griggs Street will be closed from 7:00 p.m. through 11:30 p.m. for bridge maintenance at the Boneyard Creek Crossing. Access to businesses on Race Street will remain open.

Poplar Street Closure

As part of the 2016-2018 Miscellaneous Sewer Repair Project, and weather permitting, Duce Construction will be doing a storm sewer extension and will close all lanes on Poplar Street between Green Street and Illinois Street starting on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 7:00 a.m. through Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.

Access to all driveways will be maintained throughout construction. A detour route will be used to guide traffic around the construction site and traffic control will be in place to guide motorists.

Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully through this and all construction areas. Thank you for your cooperation while this improvement is in progress.

I-74 Nighttime Lane Closures

The Illinois Department of Transportation announces centerline improvement work is scheduled through the end of June on Interstate 74 west of the University Avenue exit to west of the Prospect Avenue exit in both directions in Champaign County. This work will be performed between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. at intermittent dates.

Interstate 74 will be reduced to one lane during the project. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, restrain from using mobile devices and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

U-Cycle Collection - Memorial Day

Due to the Memorial Day holiday, U-Cycle collections will be delayed one day for the remainder of the week.  Monday's U-Cycle collection will be completed on Tuesday, Tuesday's collection will be completed on Wednesday, etc. 

Please set recycling curbside by 7 a.m. to ensure collection.

North Lincoln Avenue Lane Closure

Weather permitting, the outside southbound lane on North Lincoln Avenue near Wascher Drive will be closed starting at 9:00 a.m. Monday, May 22, 2017 through 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017 for a road repair being done by Illinois American Water Company and Shaw Brothers Concrete. Lincoln Avenue will remain open to traffic at all times during the closure.

Plans for Proposed Roadway Lighting Improvements

Construction of new streetlighting is planned for Illinois Street, Gregory Street, and Oregon Street and is scheduled to start the week of June 5th. The project is expected to end in late October 2017. The new streetlights will resemble the streetlights currently on Goodwin Avenue adjacent to the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts except the lamp will be a LED lamp instead of a metal halide lamp as is installed on Goodwin Avenue. This project is 100% funded from the City of Urbana’s Motor Vehicle Parking System Fund.

The proposed improvements consist of roadway lighting removal and replacement, installation of underground conduit and cables and other incidental work. The proposed roadway lighting improvements are located along Oregon Street from Mathews Avenue to Lincoln Avenue, Gregory Street from Oregon Street to Illinois Street, and Illinois Street from Goodwin Avenue to Lincoln Avenue in the City of Urbana. The City of Urbana will oversee the construction of this project.

Green Street Road Closure & Mathews Avenue Direction Reversal

Green Street will be open to two-way traffic from Wright Street to Mathews Avenue by 8:00 pm Friday, September 1, 2017. Also, the traffic direction on Mathews Avenue from Springfield Avenue to Green Street will be reversed from one way travelling southbound to one-way travelling northbound by 10:00 am Wednesday, September 6. Green Street will remain closed from Mathews Avenue to Goodwin Avenue until further notice.

During the closure of Green Street eastbound/westbound traffic on Green Street will use a marked detour route via Wright Street-Springfield Avenue-Goodwin Avenue. Northbound and southbound traffic at the Mathews Avenue and Green Street intersection will be maintained at all times. Access to the Illini Union and Natural History Building on Green Street will be available at all times via Wright Street. Pedestrian access for the CUMTD bus stop system will be available at bus stops provided on Springfield Avenue and Goodwin Avenue in the vicinity of the project. CUMTD buses will not be using Green Street from Wright Street to Mathews Avenue at this time.
