Storm Sewer Cleaning and Televising Project

Date:
April 30, 2018 - 5:00pm

The City of Urbana has contracted with Michels Corporation, from Brownsville, WI, to clean and televise 43,300 linear feet of storm sewer pipe to maintain the integrity of the storm sewer system. Beginning Monday, January 29, 2018 Michels Corporation will be performing storm sewer cleaning and inspections at various locations around Urbana.

The cleaning and televising of storm sewers allows the City to ensure that the storm sewer system is functioning properly and to identify deficiencies in the sewer pipes that need to be repaired. This is done with robotic cameras, vacuum excavation equipment, and high-pressure water cleaning equipment.

Maps of the areas affected by sewer cleaning and televising are available at: https://www.urbanaillinois.us/2017-SSCTV.

One or more travel lanes of a street may be closed at the cleaning and televising locations to accommodate the Contractor’s equipment and set-up. Generally, cleaning and televising is completed within one day at the location so any traffic impacts will be temporary.

City Releases Financial Forecast

Date:
January 31, 2018 - 5:00pm

The City of Urbana has released its Financial Forecast for FY2019 – FY2023. The Forecast focuses on the City’s General Operating Fund, which provides funding for most basic services, such as police and fire protection, and most public works services.

In a memo to the Urbana City Council, Finance Director Elizabeth Hannan reported that Urbana faces challenges common to many other cities in Illinois, including stagnant sales tax revenues, increasing pension costs, and declining state-shared revenues. All of this has led to a structural deficit, with expenditures growing faster than revenues. According to Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin, “Like it or not, we are faced with a new reality. Our future depends on how we respond now. We must make strategic decisions that are in the City’s long-term interest.”

January 31, 2018 - 5:00pm

Public parking facilities are provided as an enterprise activity. The amount expected to be raised in FY 17/18 is $1.46 million. Approximately 50% of the amount is collected from spaces and meters in the University campus area. The current meter rate on campus is $1.00 per hour.
