Urbana Middle School Hosts STEM Family Night

Date: December 1, 2011 - 6:00pm to 7:30pm

Science and Math teachers and students from Urbana Middle School will hold their first ever STEM Family Night on Thursday, December 1, 2011 from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. The evening will be a showcase for student work and related demonstrations.

Local scientists will also be in attendance to present science and math related activities.

Guests include members of Materials Advantage Outreach at UIUC, Mr. Don Keefer of ISGS, Mr. Dave Leake from Staerkel Planetarium and Vet Med volunteers. There will be several class projects shared by students, as well as demonstrations by members of IMSA FUSION and Lego Robotics.

Student learning is a priority at UMS, and it is their goal to help students to better understand the connections between Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. STEM education produces a more student-centered classroom, rather than the more traditional teacher-centered classroom. Students are encouraged to use questions and research to conduct experiments and explore authentic topics that connect real world problems to the curriculum.

For more information, visit the UMS Stem website or contact Tina Lehr, UMS science teacher, at 384-3685.
