Light the Night 2013 - Free Bike Light Giveaway
Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM

  • Location 1: Southeast corner of Green and Wright Streets (near Alma Mater statue), Urbana, IL
  • Location 2: Southwest corner of Illinois St and Lincoln Ave, Urbana, IL

Light the Night 2013 is taking place on Thursday, September 12 from 4-7pm, at the corner of Lincoln Ave. & Illinois St. and the corner of Green St. & Wright St.  Approximately 1,200 light sets will be installed with the help of volunteers, who also share general safety information with cyclists, and hand out educational materials such as bicycle maps and rules of the road.

Light the Night is an annual free bicycle light giveaway, funded by the Campus Area Transportation Study (CATS) agencies: the University of Illinois, C-U MTD, the City of Urbana and the City of Champaign.  Volunteers are organized by The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign. Since 2008, volunteers have helped to install over 800 sets of bicycle lights each year.  In addition to providing the lights, the goal of the event is to help educate the public that state law in Illinois requires bicycles to have a front light and rear reflector, at minimum, when riding at night.
