Snow and Ice Removal Information

City ordinances require property owners within identified snow removal districts to clear the adjacent public sidewalk of snow and ice. Sidewalk clearance must occur within 24 hours of a declaration made by the Public Works Director. After a winter storm, notice that the sidewalk clearance requirements are in effect will be issued through local media outlets and on the City's website.

The Urbana Plan on Snow Removal

When the snow begins to fall, the City of Urbana Public Works Department snow crews are prepared to spring into action with a strategically organized snow removal plan designed to get the streets cleared and you on your way as quickly as possible. 

In heavy snow events, the City works around the clock towards this goal with a force of approximately 12 crew members per 12 hour period. The city has available 23 pieces of snow control equipment, a salt storage facility with a capacity of 1400 tons, and a snow budget averaging $140,000 annually to maintain approximately 300 lane miles of roadway in Urbana.

Urbana Celebrates America Recycles Day

The City of Urbana and the Urbana Park District partnered together to celebrate America Recycles Day on Saturday, November 3rd.  The event was held at the Anita Purves Nature Center and featured several craft projects re-using household goods. Residents can participate in these projects on their own time by following the cardboard tube art guide. Organizers also collected pumpkins for composting. 

Urbana Public Television produced a video on America Recycles Day which is currently running on UPTV and available to watch on-demand via their YouTube channel.
