Illinois Joins Climate Alliance

SPRINGFIELD — Illinois has become the 18th state to join the U.S. Climate Alliance, a group of states pledging to abide by the Paris Climate Agreement, which President Donald Trump abandoned. Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed an executive order Wednesday, January 23, adding Illinois to the pact, which aims to reduce America's greenhouse-gas emissions by at least 26 percent below 2005 levels by 2025.
But now 18 states representing 43 percent of the country have pledged to work toward the Paris goals.
"Illinois is well-positioned with the Future Energy Jobs Act and its implementation starting this spring," said Scott Tess, Urbana's environmental sustainability manager. "The governor's announcement is very encouraging, and I hope that it signals an interest to build upon the Future Energy Jobs Act and to quickly move toward a 100 percent renewable electricity grid in Illinois."
Effective Monday, January 14, 2019, the City of Urbana has activated flashing enhanced pedestrian warning signs on Lincoln Avenue between Nevada Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. The enhanced pedestrian signage will operate from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the fall and spring sessions for classes at the University of Illinois. The timing of the sign operation is based upon high pedestrian volumes, which were measured during a traffic study along the corridor. These signs were installed at the north and south ends of the corridor to draw attention to the increase in pedestrian traffic.
Effective January 1, 2019, the Urbana Police Department will change how it takes some crime reports on lower dollar value incidents. Crime reports on these incidents will now be accepted via a web based report form. This change is intended to make the reporting of incidents more convenient for the reporting person and make more efficient use of our on-duty officers.
