Juneteenth Commemorated by the City of Urbana

JUNETEENTH

To commemorate the end of slavery in the United States, the City of Urbana will celebrate and acknowledge Juneteenth as an official holiday.

The official Juneteenth Flag will also be raised in a ceremony on Friday, June 17, 2022 at noon directly in front of the Urbana City Building, located at 400 South Vine Street, Urbana. Immediately following the flag raising, Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin will read a proclamation officially dedicating June 19, 2022 as Juneteenth in the City of Urbana.

The Jokers at TUFL!

You are invited to join us in the Library on Sunday, June 12, 2022, from 3 to 4 p.m. for a live performance by the Jokers!
The Jokers are Armand Beaudoin and Dorothy Martirano, musicians extraordinaire who have played together for 20 years. They have also performed with Almost”A” Quintet, the Sibs, Tangotta, Spinnin’, Slidin ‘n Scratchin’, Trombari, the Tone Road Ramblers, and other local/regional groups. They have performed frequently in Europe with dancer Kirstie Simpson. They especially like working with dancers, notably with the performance group, Compost Q (contact dance improvisation and experimental music).

Pops on the Prairie

Please join us for a fun and very visual concert that will include: Four dances from Aaron Copland’s "Rodeo.” “Tudor Fantasia,” a piece composed and animated by UPO Conductor Stephen L. Larson that features a virtual flight through Urbana High School as it looked when if first opened its doors in 1914. Noel Chi, the 16-year-old violinist who won this year’s Chambana International Music Competition, concerto division, will perform the first movement of Felix Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor. Members from the cast of this year’s Urbana Park District Youth Summer Theatre will share two songs from this year’s production of “Newsies,” accompanied by the orchestra.

Green Drinks!
