Speed Trailer

The Urbana Police Department currently uses a Decatur Electronics On-Site 400 Radar Trailer. The detector electronically displays the motorist's speed and the posted speed limit for the area. Research indicates motorists will slow down when their actual speed is displayed.

In conjunction with displaying the motorist's speed, the detector records traffic data using the EZ Stat Traffic Data Logger.  The following data is recorded:

  • Traffic data survey reports
  • Max traffic speeds
  • Average traffic speeds
  • Traffic time/speed intervals
  • Number of vehicles above traffic speed limit
  • Total number of vehicles

The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Coordinator will determine where the unit is to be placed and for how long. The STEP Coordinator's decision can be influenced by accident statistics, STEP reports or by Community Policing endeavors. Parking Enforcement will move and set up the detector.

If you feel a certain area needs to be monitored, please contact City of Urbana Public Works below.
