Urbana High School Students to Broadcast Games on UPTV

Urbana Public Television is partnering with the journalism class at Urbana High School to produce another year of sports broadcasts. The students operate the cameras and provide commentary during various high school sporting events under the supervision of UPTV production staff.

The games are available live on a subscription basis through the NFHS Network. A portion of the money collected goes to support Urbana High School. Afterwards the games are available on-demand via UPTV's YouTube channel and replay every Saturday evening at 6:30PM on UPTV. The students also produced a Fall sports preview show which features UHS Senior Joey Wright interviewing coaches about their respective teams.

Too much of a good thing wore out the old medicine take-back box at the Urbana Police Department, so it recently received an upgrade.

“People come in here all the time and fill this thing up,” said Lieutenant Robert Fitzgerald. “The old one would fill up twice a week. It would just get packed.”

The fall 2017 electronics recycling event for participating* communities will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Parkland College, Champaign. All households MUST register online to attend the event.

Online registration opens on Tuesday, September 5, 2017, at 8:00 a.m. This event is the only opportunity locally to recycle CRT (or 'tube') TVs. There is a limit of 2 TVs per household. Other electronic devices such as computers, monitors, printers, DVD players, cameras and more will be accepted at the event, with a 10 item limit of electronic devices per household accepted. Urbana Firefighters Ratify Tentative Labor Deal

The International Association of Firefighters, Local #1147, has ratified a tentative agreement for a new labor contract with the City of Urbana. The three-year agreement includes a 1% increase retroactive from July 1, 2017, a 1% increase effective July 1, 2018, and a 2% increase effective July 1, 2019.

Under the new contract, eligible firefighters will receive an additional vacation day in the final year of the agreement. It also includes language that improves firefighter training and streamlines the promotion process in light of upcoming changes to State certification requirements.

Urbana Mayor Diane Marlin said she appreciated the IAFF’s willingness to negotiate an agreement that takes the City’s economic realities into account.

“Over the past several years, the City and IAFF leadership have worked hard to nurture a collaborative and productive working relationship,” Marlin said. “This agreement represents a significant milestone in that endeavor.”
