Airport Road Pre-Construction Open House

A pre-construction open house for the Airport Road West Reconstruction Project will be held on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Urbana Civic Center, 108 East Water Street, Urbana, Illinois 61801. The open house will be conducted on an informal basis; no formal presentation is planned. Exhibits, plans and aerial photography of the proposed improvements will be available during this time. Project representatives will be available to discuss the construction plans for the project and to answer any questions.

The project consists of the reconstruction of Airport Road from a narrow two-lane chip and seal road to a new three-lane concrete street. The improvements also consist of the installation of a new drainage system with curbs/gutters, storm sewers and drainage basins, as well as modifications to the traffic signals at the Airport Road and Cunningham Avenue intersection. Farnsworth Group, Inc. of Champaign, Illinois, is the engineering consultant for the project.

UHS Presents Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street will be performed at 7:00 pm April 26 – 29 and at 2:30 pm on Sunday April 30.
All performances will be in the Urbana High School Cobb Auditorium, 1002 S. Race Street.
Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults, and are available at the box office, which opens 30 minutes prior to each performance.

Most who are familiar with the musical Sweeney Todd probably wouldn’t describe it as a “high school-appropriate” production. For starters, the show’s narrative is very dark, and from a technical perspective it’s challenging on many levels, from the Stephen Sondheim score to the mechanics of the set.

But stretching his students is exactly what UHS Director of Theatre Tim Broeker had in mind. “I try to always pick a show that has a challenge. This one is an all-encompassing beast,” Broeker said. “But it’s something the students are so excited and passionate about. They’re really rising to the occasion.”

A Poetry Reading by the Quintessential Poets

Come hear original work by members of the Quintessential Poets — all published writers from the Champaign-Urbana area who meet regularly to critique each other’s work.

The readers will be Frank Modica, John Palen, Elaine Palencia, and Pat Simpson. This is their third reading at The Urbana Free Library, and it is open and free to the public.
