Join Open Scene, a youth media arts project, for our Hip-Hop concert/showcase with Mother Nature!

Mother Nature, Inc. provides community outreach grounded in HipHop scholarship and performance with a focus on youth and young adults, ages 12-24 years old. Offering workshops and activities centered around social and political issues to educate our generation on the pertinent matters that affect their daily lives. By putting these grand topics into the universal language of HipHop, youth and young adults alike are able to more easily connect to the policies and laws being implemented that affect them.

Friday, March 24th 6-8pm - Hip-Hop concert/showcase featuring Open Scene leaders/artists.

Sunday, March 12th 2-4pm - Showcase of youth hip-hop and community discussion.

Storytelling with Andrea Perkins

Join Open Scene, a youth media arts project, as we kick off our next artist workshop weekend with Native storyteller, Andrea Perkins!

Bio for Artist: An award winning writer, Andrea learned traditional storytelling and Northwest Indigenous art from her mother and grandmother. Andrea has used this knowledge to share stories on issues facing Indigenous communities with audiences across the country. <> Friday, March 10th 6-8pm - Andrea will give an artist talk and demonstration on Native oral traditions and facilitate discussion on the importance of oral traditions and how writing has helped share and create new styles of Indigenous storytelling and how Open Scene might begin to write about and create our own.

Sunday, March 12th 2-4pm - Open scene stakeholders and artists will showcase art created with Andrea and open up and lead the IMC in arts-based dialogue, merging diverse ways of storytelling and art making

First Friday Reading and Book Signing with Patricia Hruby Powell

Award-winning author, dancer, and storyteller Patricia Hruby Powell will be reading from and signing her recently-released documentary novel Loving vs. Virginia at the Urbana Free Library. The novel recounts the powerful love story of Richard and Mildred Loving, the interracial couple whose civil rights victory made history. As part of her program, Patricia will show clips from Nancy Buirski's acclaimed documentary, The Loving Story. (Courtesy Icarus Films). Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event, courtesy of Jane Addams Book Shop.

Patricia Hruby Powell danced throughout the Americas and Europe with her dance company, One Plus One, before becoming a storyteller and a writer of children’s books. Her picture book Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker (Chronicle 2014) has garnered numerous high-profile awards. You can visit Patricia online at talesforallages.com.

The Curtis Road Corridor Study includes 4.6 miles of Curtis Road from Neil Street/U.S. 45 to High Cross Road/IL 130. The goal of this study is to identify infrastructure that facilitates mobility within and between the surrounding jurisdictions as well as supports and protects the disparate surrounding land uses, including the University of Illinois agricultural research and educational fields known as the South Farms.

MCORE Pre-Construction Open House

A pre-construction open house for the MCORE (Multimodal Corridor Enhancement) project will be held on Wednesday, February 22, 2017, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the project field office located at 24 East Green Street, Unit 19, Champaign, Illinois 61820.

The open house will be conducted on an informal basis; no formal presentation is planned. Exhibits, plans and aerial photography of the proposed improvements will be available for viewing during this time. Project representatives will be available to discuss the current construction plans for the project and to answer any questions.

The MCORE project is a transformative $44 million project designed to improve mobility in the core of the community. Project partners include the City of Urbana, City of Champaign, Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
