Learn about vernacular building types in Urbana in this lecture, the second of three, as part of National Preservation Month. Event takes place in the Lewis Auditorium at the Urbana Free Library at 7:00PM on May 18.


The two other lectures in this series, "What Style is it? Understanding Architectural Styles" and "A History of Urbana's Antebellum Houses" will be presented at the Urbana Free Library’s Lewis Auditorium on May 11 and 25, also at 7:00PM.

Celebrate National Preservation Month with a walking tour highlighting vernacular buildings in the Historic East Urbana neighborhood. The tour will begin at the Market at the Square at 10:00AM and will end back at the Market around 11:00. Bring your walking shoes!


This is the third of three tours scheduled for Preservation Month that will leave from the Market at the Square. The others will take place on the 7th and 14th. This tour is a companion to the "Good Form - Understanding Vernacular Building Types" lecture taking place on Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00PM at the Urbana Free Library (Lewis Auditorium).

Preservation Month - Bike Tour of Modern Homes

Celebrate National Preservation Month and National Bike Month with a leisurely bike tour of modern homes in Urbana. The tour will begin at the Market at the Square at 10:00AM and will follow a low-traffic, low-stress route past some of Urbana's best modern houses, ending back at the Market. Bring your own bike!


This is the first of three tours scheduled for Preservation Month that will leave from the Market at the Square. The others will take place on the 14th and 21st, and will be walking tours through nearby neighborhoods.

Every year during National Bike Month (May), the Cities of Urbana and Champaign, along with Champaign County Bikes, host Bike to Work Day to encourage people to ride their bikes to work. So whether you ride your bike to work everyday, or have never done it before, please sign up and visit one of our Bike to Work Day stations for free snacks and coffee on your way to the office.


Stations are open from 7:00-10:00AM. We hope to see you there!

Countywide Residential Electronics Collection Event

The next FREE Countywide Residential Electronics Collection Event will be held on Saturday, May 21, 2016, from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (noon) at Parkland College (parking lot M-4); 2400 W. Bradley Avenue, Champaign.  Event traffic must enter at the Duncan Road entrance, and follow event directional signs.


With limited TV recycling options locally, this event is a great opportunity for residents of Champaign County to recycle unwanted TVs.  All TV sizes are accepted, both working and non-working.  Dismantled TVs or monitors will not be accepted.  All TVs and monitors must be intact.

Urbana High School Production of High School Musical

HSM PosterUrbana – Approximately 80 students are involved in Urbana High School’s upcoming production of High School Musical, one of that school’s largest theatre shows in recent years. The musical is set to be staged in UHS’s Cobb Auditorium April 27, 28, 29 and 30 at 7:00 pm, and May 1 at 2:30 pm.


Disney’s popular High School Musical has been performed on many a high school stage around the U.S. for nearly a decade, but the show’s message about avoiding stereotypes is not always one that’s easily lived out in actual school hallways. At Urbana High, however, theatre director Tim Broeker said he’s glad to see many students avoiding social boxes they might otherwise be put in.


“We have many different types of students at Urbana who like getting involved in theatre productions,” Broeker said. “It’s not just your stereotypical theatre kids—the students in the shows also play sports, excel at academics, and have a wide range of extracurricular interests.”

Whether fun and frolicky or somber and serene, Mama Edie’s presentations are powerful reminders of our own beauty and strength and the gifts we are to the world.
