2016 Illinois Green Infrastructure Conference: Stormwater in the Urban Ecosystem

Join us at the i-Hotel Conference Center in Champaign for this one-day free event featuring Dan Christian with Tetra Tech and Steve Zimmerman with Applied Ecological Services.  Topics to be covered: green infrastructure design principles, show to use native plants in an urban area, and how to plan for community concerns such as mosquitos and geese. Your registration also guarantees your spot on a free tour of green infrastructure practices in the community.  

Professionals will be able to earn 5 PDH and 5 CEU.

Art at the Market

Join the Urbana Public Arts Program on Saturday, September 10th, 2016 for music and arts activities at Urbana’s Market at the Square. Find us at the Northwest corner of the market between 8:00am and 12:00pm.

All programs offered are free, and no registration is needed.From 8:00am to 12pm,  Judiee will teach visitors how to do sun-prints, or you can make your own button using a button-making equipment. Both activities are simple and for all ages.

Artist of the Corridor Opening Reception: Mini Masterpainters

Join the Urbana Public Arts Program for the opening reception of Mini Masterpainters, an exhibition by Judy Lee. This reception will take place on Thursday, July 14, from 5:00pm to 6:30pm at the Urbana City Building (400 S. Vine Street). Refreshments will be served, and everyone is welcome.

Judy is an artist and designer based in Urbana. After graduating from art school, Judy briefly worked as a graphic designer before taking on a post as a preschool art teacher, where she rediscovered her love for art and stories. She is currently working on a picture book series about artists, along with other creative projects. She is currently the featured Artist of the Corridor.

Urbana School District Centralized Registration Dates

July 27, 2016 - 9:00am to July 28, 2016 - 7:00pm

Urbana School District #116 will hold their annual centralized registration at the end of July. The days and times are as follows:

  • Wednesday, July 27th – 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, July 28th – 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

The one-stop-shop for all Urbana students, early childhood through high school, will take place at Urbana Middle School, 1201 S. Vine St., Urbana. If you are registering a new or returning student, please remember to bring a photo ID and proof of residency. If you have a child entering kindergarten, 6th or 9th grades, please bring their completed physical forms to registration. Enrollment requirements and documents for new and returning students can be found on the USD #116 web site here: http://www.usd116.org/index.php/parents/registration/ Registration fees can be made online at the USD #116 Web Store. Please bring the printed receipt with you.

Art at the Market

Join the Urbana Public Arts Program on Saturday, August 13th, 2016 for music and arts activities at Urbana’s Market at the Square! Find us at the Northwest corner of the market between 8:00am and 12:00pm. All programs offered are free, and no registration is needed.

From 8:00am to 12pm, learn how to transform old t-shirts into tote bags with Makerspace. The activitiy is simple for people of all ages and can be completed in less than 10 minutes. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own t-shirts for a "remake."

From 9:30am to 11:30, enjoy upbeat music by a Latin-themed instrumental trio, Los Guapos. Their style ranges from salsa, rumba, cumbia, and son montuno. The trio plays music by Arsenio Rodriguez, Mongo Santamaria, Orlando "Cachaito" Lopez, Marc Ribot, Ry Cooder, as well as original compositions. Check out a sample of their latest performance here.

Come out to Uncork Urbana Wine Festival

Looking for something to do on Saturday afternoon? Why not celebrate the diverse and delicious wines that the state of Illinois has to offer? Uncork Urbana Wine Festival is the chance for wine-lovers in the area to come together and enjoy a day of wine, music and food. Admission to the festival is $15 which includes 5 tasting tickets and a souvenir wine glass. The cut off date for registration is June 18 at 5 pm. After that, admission is $20 (cash only). Come on out to the corner of Race and Main and enjoy the Uncork Urbana Wine Festival!

 

Wiley Elementary Bike Rodeo

The Champaign-Urbana Safe Routes to School (C-U SRTS) Project, Urbana School District #116, Champaign County Bikes, City of Urbana, and Champaign-­Urbana Mass Transit District are holding a bike rodeo at Wiley Elementary on May 18th, from 1 to 2:30pm on the driveway behind the school to teach fifth-­graders bicycle safety and bicycling skills.


The C-U SRTS Project Bicycle Rodeo is an opportunity for parents and children to learn how to be safe when bicycling and to practice some basic bicycling skills. The Bicycle Rodeo scheduled for May 18th will include:

Preservation Month - History of Urbana's Antebellum Houses

Join us as Stewart Berlocher presents his fascinating research on Urbana's Civil War-era buildings and neighborhoods in this lecture, the last of three, as part of National Preservation Month. Event takes place in the Lewis Auditorium at the Urbana Free Library at 7:00PM on May 25.


The two other lectures in this series, "What Style is it? Understanding Architectural Styles" and "Good Form - Understanding Vernacular Building Types" will be presented at the Urbana Free Library’s Lewis Auditorium on May 11 and 18, also at 7:00PM.
