Poetry Karaoke, or poem-aoke, is a fast-paced reading of poems written by established poets.

Similar to a Top 40 list, our book of poems represents a cross-section of contemporary work as well as some old classics. Similar to traditional karaoke, you choose one to read and put your name on the list.

When it is your turn, you read the poem you selected.

You may use our book, an anthology, or bring in your favorite poem - as long as it was written by someone else and previously published.

Man Safe after Dangling from Illini Union Clock Tower

On July 25, 2018 at 12:36 p.m., the Urbana Fire Department received a report of a man dangling from the Illini Union clock tower. UFD responded with two engines (E254 & E251) and a ladder company (L261) along with incident command (C220). Firefighters found a sub-contractor who was performing repair work on the clock face of the clock tower had lost his footing and was in peril of sliding off of the roof had it not been for his safety rope attached to him. Firefighters used the aerial ladder and a roof ladder to get onto roof and safely escort this man down to the ground. The man refused medical treatment by paramedics on standby and then spent some time thanking the firefighters who came to his rescue today. The Urbana Fire Department has one of the few state wide technical rescue teams and they are very well trained for all technical rescues such as trench rescue, confined space, collapse rescue and in the case of today’s incident: high angle rescue.

Urbana Landmark Hotel Up for Auction

Date:
September 11, 2018 - 9:00am to September 13, 2018 - 9:00am

The City of Urbana has been notified by brokerage Avison Young that the Urbana Landmark Hotel will be put up for auction beginning September 11, 2018.

Mayor Diane Marlin asked that developers step forward with their transformative ideas for Downtown Urbana.

“The location is outstanding and could be put to many vibrant uses—especially with the upcoming MCORE reconstruction of Green Street that will lead people directly from campus to the doorstep of the hotel property in the heart of downtown Urbana,” Marlin said. “We’ve asked the community to help re-envision the nine square blocks containing Lincoln Square Mall, the Landmark Hotel, and eight acres of public parking lots. We need to be imaginative and bold and enhance this site in a way that will serve the community for the next 50 years.”
