2013 Tiger Open Fundraiser

The 2013 Tiger Open, a golf scramble to benefit Urbana High School Athletics, is scheduled for Saturday, June 8th at the University of Illinois Orange Golf Course in Savoy. The IMP Shotgun fundraiser begins at 1pm, with registration and lunch beginning at 11:30am prior to the tournament.

The format for this annual event is a four-person Scramble, non-handicapped with Mulligans available for purchase (limit 2 per golfer, please). Prizes will be awarded to golfers in a multitude of categories, along with raffle prizes and the win a New Car for a hole-in-one! Participants registering prior to May 25th will be charged $320 fee. The fee is raised to $340 for participants registering after May 25th. The fee includes: green fees for four golfers, a cart, range balls prior to their round, lunch before the tournament and a light dinner after their round, on-course refreshments, entry into the Tiger Open raffle, and eligibility for other awards and prizes. All proceeds from this year’s Tiger Open will be used to help finance upgrades to the UHS John Gremer Strength and Fitness facility.

Pomp and Circumstance for GED Graduates

The Adult Education programs of Parkland College and Urbana School District #116 will host their annual GED Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in the Parkland College Theatre, 2400 W. Bradley Ave., Champaign.

This cap and gown ceremony includes all persons who passed the GED since last June at Parkland College, Urbana Adult Education, or the Champaign-Ford Regional Office of Education. Guests are welcome.

As a part of the program, there will be speakers and entertainment. Refreshments will be served immediately following the ceremony. Please call 351-2580 for more information.

2013 Arbor Day Celebration

2013 City of Urbana Arbor Day Celebration

This year’s Celebration will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 26 at Leal School Gymnasium located at 312 W. Oregon Street in Urbana.

The itinerary is as follows:

  • 1:00 p.m. Welcome from City Arborist
  • 1:05 p.m. Arbor Day Proclamation read by Urbana Mayor Laurel Prussing
  • 1:10 p.m. Overview of Arbor and Bird Day in Illinois
  • 1:15 p.m. Legacy Tree renditions by Leal School Artists
  • 1:35 p.m. Tree Planting Ceremony on southeast side of building
  • 1:50 p.m. Refreshments

Urbana School District Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration for all Urbana District #116 schools will take place Tuesday, April 16, 2013 from 12noon to 6pm at the Urbana Civic Center, 108 E. Water St., Urbana. Students registering during the event will receive a “fun bag” full of activities and materials to use during the summer.

The registration event is for students entering Martin Luther King Elementary School, Leal Elementary School, Prairie Elementary School, Thomas Paine Elementary School, Wiley Elementary School and Yankee Ridge Elementary School. Items needed for registration include the child’s official birth certificate with raised seal, parent or guardian photo ID, and proof of Urbana residency. Information about the dual language program at Prairie and Leal will be available, as well as information about English as a Second Language screening.

Informational Meeting for Main Street Bike Lanes and Pedestrian Improvements

The City of Urbana will hold an Informational Meeting concerning the proposed Main Street Resurfacing, Traffic Signal Upgrades, Bike Lanes and Pedestrian Improvements between Cedar Street and Dewey Street.

The meeting will be held at the Urbana Civic Center on Thursday, April 4, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. All persons interested in this project are invited to attend this meeting. Persons with a disability planning to attend this meeting should contact the individual listed below by Monday, April 1, 2013. If special accommodations are required, the contact person should be informed at the time of contact. The meeting room is accessible to persons with a disability.

Because of differing funding sources, the project is to be bid and constructed as three separate projects. Bids for the Cedar Street to Vine Street Resurfacing, Signal Upgrades at Broadway Avenue and Vine Street, Raised Median at Walnut Street Pedestrian Crossing and ADA Curb Ramp Construction at Race Street, Broadway Avenue and Walnut Street will be received on April 19, 2013.

Electronics Recycling Collection Event

A countywide electronics recycling event will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013, from 8 AM - 12 noon.

Items accepted at the free drop-off event include the following:  Televisions, computers (desktop, laptop, tablet), monitors, computer components, printers/scanners, radios/stereos, VCRs, DVD players, mobile phones, office electronics, digital cameras, communication devices, gaming systems and microwaves.  Limit 10 items per resident.

The event will be held at The News-Gazette Distribution Center located at 3202 Apollo Drive, Champaign.  Residents must enter the event at Market Street and Olympian Drive in Champaign.  Event will be held rain or shine.
