June 12, 2019 - 5:00pm

The Firefighter-EMT position is consistently one of the most competitive and sought-after positions at the City. This selection process will create an eligibility list to fill vacancies for the next two years.

Urbana Fire Chief Charles Lauss noted that this year’s campaign theme is “Climb the Ladder,” which refers to both the challenging selection process and the demanding career. “This is a field where no two days are ever alike, and you always have to bring your best effort,” he stated. “However, our slogan is that ‘opportunity starts with the first step.’ With these challenges come incredible rewards, both personally and professionally.”

National Police Week

Date:
May 17, 2019 - 5:00pm

National Police Week

HISTORY

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

Currently, tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Memorial Service began in 1982 as a gathering in Senate Park of approximately 120 survivors and supporters of law enforcement. Decades later, the event, more commonly known as National Police Week, has grown to a series of events which attracts thousands of survivors and law enforcement officers to our Nation's Capital each year.
