Pavement Work on I-74 Begins Aug. 5

I-74 Road WorkURBANA — The Illinois Department of Transportation announces that pavement repairs on Interstate 74 between High Cross Road and Prospect Avenue will begin Monday, Aug. 5.

The work involves milling and resurfacing from High Cross Road to east of Cunningham Avenue in Urbana and microsurfacing from Cunningham Avenue to west of Prospect Avenue in Champaign. Repairs to guardrails also will be performed.

The project is expected to last approximately seven weeks and will require nighttime lane closures between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays, with at least one lane open in each direction at all times.

Survey: Stephens Family YMCA Expansion into Urbana

YMCA MESSAGE FROM MAYOR DIANE WOLFE MARLIN:

"The Stephens Family YMCA is looking at options for expansion in the Champaign-Urbana area.

They are considering the possibility of expanding at their current location as well as EXPANDING INTO URBANA.

In order to better consider the needs of the community, the YMCA is conducting a Community Needs Assessment. They would greatly appreciate your input. This assessment will help guide the YMCA board and staff to determine the programs and services that are most needed to help our community and where they should be located.

The survey link will take you to a short on-line survey. Responses are not individually tracked and are kept confidential. There is an English version and a version in Spanish. The assessment should take no more than 5 minutes to complete.

Summer Movie Nights Through August

This month, we're delighted to feature the World first biopic created out of 65,000 oil paintings chronicling the life of Vincent Van Gogh, Loving Vincent. Popcorn and popsicles will be available for purchase. The film will screen at sundown (estimated 8:30 p.m.). This event is free and open to the public.

Urbana Sweetcorn FestivalThe Urbana Sweetcorn Festival was voted the #1 Community Event in The News-Gazette's People Choice Awards! We can't wait to have you, your family and friends out to the festival this year! The festival takes place August 23, from 5 p.m. to midnight, and August 24, from 11 a.m  to midnight, right here in Downtown Urbana!

The first Urbana Sweetcorn Festival was held in August 1975 in the parking lot at Main & Race Streets in downtown Urbana. It was a community event put on by the employees of local business Busey Bank.

The Urbana Business Association is now responsible for the planning of the festival, over the years adding an expanded family area, live music on multiple stages, food, vendors, and beer all in the heart of downtown Urbana.

First Finanacial Philo Road Banking Center is having a Hsred Day! Bring in personal papers you no longer need for secure, on-the-spot shredding. They are also collecting worn and faded American flags for respectful disposal by the VFW. Limit five boxes or bags of paper per person!

Library Celebrates 145th Anniversary

Founded in 1874, The Urbana Free Library has proudly served the people of Urbana ever since. Help us celebrate 145 years of Library service!

Come listen to live music from Almost "A" Trio, explore a selection of documents and items from the Library's history presented by the Champaign County Historical Archives, play a library-themed BINGO game, enjoy anniversary crafts, food and refreshments, and more!

The celebration continues throughout the year so watch for more events in the future!

Art at the Market

From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. participate in family-focused art making, together with bubbles, chalk art, and more! Local flow artist and magician, Michael Moxie, will lead a workshop on how to juggle like a pro! From 9:30am-11:30am, enjoy a performance from local band, The Young and the Fretless, performing old-time mountain music on the prairie--a mix of Appalachian Mountain and Midwestern tunes and songs. Featuring Lyle Konigsberg (fiddle, banjo), Tom Bassett (fretless banjo, ukulele), Hilary Valentine (guitar, dulcimer), and Rebecca Grosser (bass)!
