Students at Leal Elementary School Will Help Break a Guinness World Record

On October 12th, Leal Elementary School in Urbana is going to participate in “Let’s Jump”—a Guinness Book of World’s Records attempt to break the record for the most people doing jumping jacks in a 24-hour period. It is part of an initiative sponsored by Michelle Obama and National Geographic Kids Magazine.

Urbana School District to Dedicate South Soccer Fields

At long last the new UHS soccer field is complete! Players, family members, alumni and community members are invited to a brief dedication ceremony immediately following the varsity soccer game this Saturday, October 8th. The ceremony is expected to start at 1:30 pm.


A special announcement, regarding the naming of the field, will be made at the dedication. We hope you will be able to attend and celebrate the completion of the Academic/Athletic Complex.

International Walk to School Day

Walk to School DayUrbana elementary schools are looking forward to participating in Walk to School Day on Wednesday, October 5, 2011. Students, parents and staff will be walking as a group to promote safe and improved streets, healthier habits and cleaner air.


Walk to School Day is organized by the C-U Safe Routes to School Project, a community based organization with representatives from the CU Mass Transit District, Champaign County Regional Planning Commission, Champaign-Urbana engineering and law enforcement, Champaign-Urbana School Districts, local health agencies, bike clubs and more. By raising awareness of how walkable a community is and where improvements can be made, the project aims to make walking and bicycling to school safe and appealing for children. UC2B Community Ambassador Job Application Assistance Workshop

UC2B is Hiring Community Ambassadors


UC2B is the short name for Urbana-Champaign Big Broadband, which is a collaboration between the cities of Urbana and Champaign, the University of Illinois, and several other public and private partners. Together, they received grant funding to build a fiber-optic Internet network that offers fast, high-speed internet access to neighborhoods, businesses, and Community Anchor institutions across Urbana-Champaign.


Prairie Elementary Students to Visit Champaign County Courthouse

To tie into their Civil War unit, 5th graders from Prairie Elementary School will take a tour of the Champaign County courthouse this Thursday, September 22nd.


Students will view a special flag exhibit, given by the Daughters of the Revolution; visit an exhibit about President Lincoln; and take a tour of a court room. The tour will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Wiley Students Participate in a Week of Learning at Krannert Art Museum

This week through Friday, September 16, forty-five fifth grade students from Wiley Elementary will attend school at Krannert Art Museum. The project, called KAM-WAM (Krannert Art Museum – Week At the Museum), is a result of Wiley’s efforts to collaborate with various units at the University of Illinois. Students will be attending classes throughout the museum from 9:00am – 2:30pm, Monday, September 12 – Friday, September 16.
